Betrayed by the Daily News
I grew up with this paper, as did my parents and grandparents. It is especially popular with my community (African-Americans). It's one of the oldest and most reliably Democratic newspapers in the nation.

Yesterday, they endorsed Bush for re-election. Made we want to puke. Any explanation from forum members would be appreciated.

2. Bizarre
they seem to be buying the bs 100%. Safer indeed.

Anyway, Bush won't crack 40% in New York, so let them delude themselves.

3. Yeah -- and what an "endorsement"
...
The News is dismayed by Bush's domestic record. His presidency simply has not been about serving the interests of middle-class and working-class families, whose fortunes have declined. Most tellingly, Bush weighted the centerpiece of his program — deep tax cuts — to the wealthy, providing a costly bonanza to those on top without generating an economic lift for everyone else. A sorry result was the biggest drop from budgetary surplus to deficit in U.S. history — just a few years before millions of baby boomers will retire and thus threaten the solvency of Social Security and Medicare.

Kerry's domestic agenda is preferable. He would repeal Bush's tax reductions on incomes of $200,000 and up, promises to find money for new programs without increasing the deficit and has advanced thoughtful proposals for addressing intractable problems such as the growing number of Americans without health insurance. His plan generally tracks the philosophies of Democratic predecessors Bill Clinton and Al Gore.

BUT ........
And so Bush led the country to invade Saddam Hussein's Iraq, enraging some allies and alienating half the American people. We supported the President and we continue to believe he made the right decision.

4. Between...
the first sentences:

The United States is at war — long-term, make no mistake. Muslim fanatics are bent on destroying the rest of humankind.

and practically charging Kerry with giving comfort to the enemy, I think it's pretty clear what happened. They let themselves be taken over by fear rather than rational thought.

11. Bush's long-term war is supposed to last more than
the next 4 years. If we were unfortunate enough to have Bush win this time, who do they think they'd be endorsing at the point? Extension of presidential terms? Another Bush? Its a pretty stupid reason to base an endorsement on.

5. Mortimer Zuckerman is pretty conservative, I think
And honestly, I don't think I've ever considered the Daily News to be *that* Democratic. I wouldn't worry too much about the endorsement, anyway; Bush has no chance to take New York.

13. In which case he should be endorsing the ticket that is competent
and engaged enough to actively pursue PEACE in the region, like Bill Clinton did.

If you polled Israelis, I'd be VERY surprised if Bush's approval rating was higher than it is here. I'd imagine it's quite a bit lower.

The only thing Bush cares about in the Middle East is Oil. The only country he cares about in the region is Saudi Arabia. The only interest most of his party has in Israel is so that the Jews hold onto it long enough for Jesus to come back--- and smite them, and the rest of us nonbelievers- as he zaps the "left behind" crowd out of their fish-laden minivans.

9. They not only betrayed you, they betrayed New York City --
as the Bush administration has, by breaking the promises made to aid the city, and by shuffling "Homeland Security" funds to tiny locales in Red States. Shame on the Daily News!

10. I live in Denver and the Post endorsed Bush...
...coincidently, the Post was recently purchased by a republican. Another thing is, some of these papers might be hedging their bets on a Bush win and they want to stay in favor.

that hide their profile. No offense to the poster, just been happening WAY too often lately.

Meanwhile, what are the total paper endorsements looking like these days anyway? Last I saw it was 111 to 70 something for Kerry, and over 30 had supported Shrub in 2000. Who did this paper support in 2000 anyway?

On edit, nevermind. Overlooked this paragraph:

The News endorsed Clinton and Gore in the three races beginning with 1992, each time judging their domestic agendas in the best interests of the American people. But it is no longer Sept. 10th. The world has changed. And nowhere has it been more tragically altered than in New York. And nowhere are the stakes higher.

19. They're both right wing tabloids...
The NEWS has had several incarnations going from off-the-wall right wing back in the fifties sixties and seventies to relati=tively moderately right.

Much like crazy-Murdoch POST, nowadays; except NEWS will publish a variety of POVs (POST will not) and *sometimes* the NEWS makes a distinction between news and commentary (the POST does not).

They are both AWFUL, as far as newspapers go.

20. NY Post is to NY Times as FAUX NEWS is to CNN or any other responsible net
IOW, if CNN or CBS lean occasionally ever so slightly to the left, FAUX is WAY far wy way way over on the opposite right.

16. Publisher Zuckerman's chief interest seems to be...

supporting Likud and Sharon in Israel. All other issues pale in comparison. B has given the Likudniks a blank check.

Doesn't matter that B's core evangelical constituency want to see Jews and other non-Christians condemned to hell for eternity; what matters to Z. et al is percieved short term advantages that are produced by this demented alliance.
