Bob Stein on CBS Sunday Morning |
|
Was quite nauseating in his expressed support of Bush, but one thing caught my ear: he was stating that Bush supports Israel even though only 6% (I think) of the Jews vote for him.
And it dawned on me that Bush does not support Israel for its sake. I am no Biblical scholar, but doesn't it say someplace that the Jews have to be secure in their land before Armageddon happens, before the Second Coming and before, of course, when everyone will accept Jesus as his/her Saviour?

After him was the always great Nancy Giles who expressed her support for Kerry. I wish I could have a copy of her essay.

5. Neither am I a Biblical scholar... |

... and a lot of the Rapture stuff is a mishmosh of Old Testament, Revelations and the added notations in the so-called Scofield Bible.
But, as I understand this mythology, Christ will not reappear until a number of conditions are met. A dark force invades the Holy Land (in current thinking, that dark force is either Russia or the UN, depending upon just how crazy the fundie is). In some versions, all Jews must return to the Holy Land. In most versions, though, the Jews must repent and accept Christ, even though only 144,000 of them will be saved and rise up to heaven. The remainder build the new Temple of Christ on the site of the Dome of the Rock, then have to fight it out at Armageddon against the dark forces led by the anti-Christ. The Jews that won't convert get slaughtered in the battle for the world.
The good fundies are lifted up to heaven where they watch the battle and share some of God's popcorn while all the misery goes on below. When the battle is won, Christ assumes the throne and the world goes on blissfully for a thousand more years under his benevolent guidance. Or something like that. :eyes:
But, ultimately, the fundies' view of Israel is strictly manipulative and rife with ulterior motives.
Jives very well with the neo-cons' cynical desires to strengthen Israel militarily until it is capable of dominating the Middle East.

6. May I remind Jewish DUers what consigliere James Baker once said... |
|
"F*ck the Jews, they don't vote for us anyway." And the reason we don't vote Republican is because the Democrats are pro-Israel AND for social justice. Social justice issues are every bit as important to the Jewish community as our beloved Israel and we will not abandon the Democrats simply because Bush decides to back everything a right wing Prime Minister supports.
I loved the Miami Herald poll from this week showing Bush only getting 15% of South Florida Jewish voters. Glad to know I'm not the only one not buying into Bush's baloney.
