The Republican Party just left a flyer on my car in the church parking lot
Edited on Sun Oct-31-04 01:11 PM by spooked
I found it on my windshield after attending mass today. They put one on the dozens of cars parked in the church's parking lot.

The colorful glossy card stock paper has a flattering photo of Bush* and a not so flattering one of Kerry.

This is what it says:

"Who Shares Your Values? You Decide"

It then lists these issues and two columns with "SUPPORTS" in the Bush column for each of these issues and "OPPOSES" in the Kerry column for each issue.

Partial Birth Abortion Ban
Defense of Marriage Act
Prohibit Distributing Morning After Pill to Children in Schools
Expanded Child Tax Credit
Parental Notification of Abortion
Prohibit Taxpayer Funding of Abortions
Appoint Pro-Life Judges

"This November 2nd, it is critical to support the candidate who works to strenghthen the family and the culture of life. We need a President who brings honor and integrity to the highest office of the land--who stands for our shared values."

"Vote Your Values" and
"Paid for by the Maine Republican Party"

Anybody else getting any political leaflets while in church?? Do you think the church is condoning this or is the Republican Party doing this without permission?

Just in case they haven't heard, Catholics are voting for Kerry!

The flyers are paid for by the Maine Republican Party, so it's probably Maine.

The actions of the republican party leaving flyers on the cars at churches during Sunday Service has been reported to the F.E.C. and I.R.S. to determine the fate of the current tax-exempt status of churches across this country. Since you feel that the separation should not exist, neither should the tax-exemption. Thank you for helping our cause.

...of course I'm a Satanist so I don't go to church.

However, when I went to see F9/11 opening day, I got a flyer advertising $10 off a psychic reading. I have a couple of anti-bush bumper stickers on my car and a sticker of the symbol of baphomet, so I don't know if that is why I got that flyer. No other car next to mine got one. :scared:

12. Happened here in Philadelphia
Same damn flyer.
Spotted it under the windshield wiper of a car in my neighborhood, and didn't know what it was. Picked it up and saw what it was. Noticed them on cars all down the block. So, Mrs Gone Off Shore and I walked around for about 15 minutes snagging them, tearing them in half and then brought them home and put them in the trash. (And yes, we washed our hands afterwards people.) Got about 50 I think. This is a very liberal neighborhood, except for the Cathederal of Sts Peter and Paul which houses the St. John Neumann shrine.

17. Yeah, I was wondering if it was a national effort.
I think the Repugs thought the gay marriage issue was going to be a much bigger wedge issue than it has turned out to be. Perhaps that's why Kerry HAD to mention Cheney's daughter in the debate...he knew it was coming. and didn't want to have to depend on the media to show how hypocritical their position is.

"Perhaps that's why Kerry HAD to mention Cheney's daughter in the debate..."

Maybe Kerry should have mentioned that sizzling lesbo novel that Lynne Cheney wrote. I'm surprised we haven't seen that used more against the Cheney's. Very graphic stuff.

Sisters

Some choice quotes from this book and Shrub's recent statements about leaving gay marriage to the states might turn some votes against him or make some people just stay home.

21. I Bought A CD of a Church Service
earlier this summer just to remind myself of all the reasons I never again intend to darken a church door. More political rally than church service. They showed two video clips of shrub and then the pastor basically told everybody to vote for a candidate based on the "christian" agenda issues - abortion, homosexuality and religious expression. I was not actually present in the service. Good thing or I would have :puke:

39. Victory Christian Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma
Edited on Sun Oct-31-04 03:53 PM by wow
Sunday service the Sunday before July 4

Pastor is one Billy Joe Daugherty

Edit: This church has over 10,000 members. They broadcast their services live on the internet. Sometimes I will listen in just to hear what they are shoveling at the moment. They seem to reflect the populare trends among the fundies pretty well. Currently they are trying to raise something like $24 million for a building project. Last Sunday evening the entire service was devoted to political issues as well.

42. I Agree
even though their endorsement of the shrub was implied rather than explicitly stated.

I really think that after the shrub is defeated that there will be a major split in the republican party - and the extremist fundies will take the fall. Most fiscal conservatives don't really give a flip about the so-called moral issues of the "christian" agenda. I'm really going to enjoy that.

Mind you I am not opposed to people of faith. But I have utter and complete contempt for those who promote division within the church and within the nation in order to promote an agenda - an agenda that Biblically is completely irrelvant to selecting a good national leader. I pity God because of these jerks.

Yes, that CD (I also bought the DVD) is evidence. Perhaps someday I will be able to use it.

23. In watching the FRONTLINE episode 'The Choice'...........
I saw that this same tactic was used by Rove and Co. against Ann Richards when Dickhead was running for Gov. of Texas....the only real difference being that on the Texas flyer there was a picture of two men kissing.

No surprise they'd use the same tactic now.

That's what I've taken to saying lately...I'm friends with two lesbians and some gay dudes...all Christians too, as far as I know.

So remember...if a Republican starts picking on your friends...

"Keep your laws off my Homos!"

Say it loudly. Say it proudly. And they'll probably lose the ability to speak.

33. Rove--has done this many times in Texas--history repeating itself
Karl Rove in a Corner
by Joshua Green
The Atlantic Monthly

http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200411/green

<snip>

"Karl Rove is at his most formidable when running close races, and his skills would be notable even if he used no extreme methods. But he does use them. His campaign history shows his willingness, when challenged, to employ savage tactics.

If this year stays true to past form, the campaign will get nastier in the closing weeks, and without anyone's quite registering it, Rove will be right back in his element. He seems to understand—indeed, to count on—the media's unwillingness or inability, whether from squeamishness, laziness, or professional caution, ever to give a full estimate of him or his work. It is ultimately not just Rove's skill but his character that allows him to perform on an entirely different plane. Along with remarkable strategic skills, he has both an understanding of the media's unstated self-limitations and a willingness to fight in territory where conscience forbids most others.

Rove isn't bracing for a close race. He's depending on it."

35. Got the same flyer here in Arkansas
at my church. I was livid! I drove around the parking lot of my large church trying to see if the people handing them out were still there...they weren't. :( That may have been a good thing. I was so angry, there is no telling what I might have said to those responsible.

I noticed that the north parking lot didn't have any flyers on cars. I assumed they ran out of flyers before covering that side. When I got home, I called my parents and found out that my mom had removed all the flyers on that parking lot! I LOVE her!

The flyer says it was paid for by the Arkansas Leadership Committee 2004, but was just the same as the flyer you described, Spooked.

My first thought when I read the flyers was: "If they consider Christian values so important, then why weren't they in church this morning instead of skulking around parking lots."
