#$$@@!!! My Kerry sign was stolen! What were those ideas for how to ...
Until the past day or so, I have had no trouble with my Kerry yard sign. It was the good one, too, the one you order from the Kerry website. It was laminated and everything. Well, on Friday, I got home and found that someone (I have my suspicions!Freepers next door!), had taken it and hidden it behind a tree. So I waded back there into the mud, ruining my shoes, to retrieve it.

The next morning, the sign was gone! So was the lady's two doors down. I know the pukes are desperate, but I am sick of this!!!How do you keep your yard signs from getting stolen (painfree methods only, please, I'm a non-violent liberal, after all)??? Any ideas would be welcome.

And let me add....all the */Cheney signs are intact. Our side is SOOOO much classier, and not desperate!!!:)

2. Mine have stayed put
since I smeared Tanglefoot around the edges. Tanglefoot is available at garden stores. It is a goo that works like flypaper, and it is very difficult to get off your hands (and car seats, if you happen to put stolen goo'd up signs into your car).

13. Get Tanglefoot at local Garden Store - -
I discovered the Lowe's across from our store didn't have it, but our old timey garden center did.

32. It's usually the same peop.e who do it over and over, so
one bad experience should put them off of it. My brother in Ohio has had success with road tar and straight pins stuck in so that the sharp ends protrude out of the back. The signs were moved slightly, but not taken.

7. Habanero pepper
Get some at the grocery, chop it up and smear it on your sign.
It will be invisible...

Make sure you wear gloves!

4. Blue tattoo ink in Vaseline.
Apply with thick gloves on blue areas of sign.

Original poster said it wouldn't come off for about a year.

30. It's the fear
and desperation. They're so scared they have to make themselves feel more powerful by stealing our signs. Pathetic.

8. Never let `em see you sweat.
Grab a hunk of cardboard and a marker and make your own. While you`re outside replacing your sign, just start a happy little whistle. Take your sign in tonight if you have to. Just beat them at their own juvenile game. Whatever you do, don`t back down.

9. Mine your yard.
Well, that probably isn't such a good idea but here's what I might do.

Rub poison ivy/poison oak on it. Hope they scratch their balls after they steal your sign..

Or make a big sign that says "STEALING MY SIGN WILL NOT CHANGE MY VOTE. VOTE KERRY/EDWARDS"

10. Here ya go!
Here's what I recommend to make the culprits have stinging fingers. It won't cause permanent damage, but might cause some temporary discomfort.

Using dried red cayenne pepper flakes, make a "tea" (quart of boiling water over 1/4 c. flakes) then strain through a coffee filter and spray over your sign. Let dry.

The oils released from the peppers will stick on the sign and then on the fingers and skin of the thief.

Handle your own sign with gloves that you can wash, or throw-away gloves.

...Bush lost a million jobs:Clinton added 22 million
.. Bush:Wages down 1500: Clinton, up $7 000
... Bush gives tax breaks for Outsourcing
... Bush, stocks down 700: Clinton, up 7 000
Now see my post for more.
Use a felt pen and posterboard from a dimestore. Skip the stick, use two posterboards leaning on each other.

12. I think I'll start bringing it in
but on Friday, it was moved behind my tree and stuck into the ground during the day. Weird. These people are insane. I mean, I'm as rabid an anti-* person as there is, and I would never steal someone's */Cheney sign. First of all, I wouldn't want to touch it. You never know where it's been.

17. Mine was stolen last night
By kids at a party a couple blocks over. I went over and calmly told them my Kerry sign was to go back in my yard immediately. Told them the rubber mallet would be in the yard and they could put it on the porch when they were done.

It was back up within minutes. My pumpkins were smashed and some of my Halloween decorations stolen too but kids with be kids, no? Just don't mess with the K/E sign....

Edited on Sun Oct-31-04 05:48 PM by mvd
I don't think the storm could have blown it down. Surprisingly, it looks like it was done by someone in my quiet neighborhood, since no other close-by Kerry signs were stolen. My neighborhood has NO other signs that I've seen. But I just put up two more today and will leave the porch light on overnight. It's times like these that I wish my dog Reba was a watchdog. :-)

36. Tie a pit bull to it? Or else...
Plant the sign in a little patch of grass; dig up everything around it so that it makes a pit about 8 feet deep around the Kerry island. (Pointy stakes, superglue, land shark all optional). Cover the hole with tarp and scatter leaves over the whole thing. Then wait...
