Former Michigan foes unite behind Kerry
Edited on Sat Jan-17-04 05:12 PM by Skinner
By George Weeks / The Detroit News

In politics, yesterday's adversaries often are today's allies. So it is today with Democrats Jim Blanchard and Dan Mulhern - to the benefit of Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry's presidential campaign. Mulhern, husband of Gov. Jennifer Granholm, was instrumental in getting her to seek and win the 2002 gubernatorial nomination that ex-governor Blanchard also sought. Blanchard and Mulhern obviously weren't chummy that year.

This week, as co-chairs of Kerry's Michigan campaign, Mulhern and Blanchard said in a letter to 10,000 Michigan Democrats 'we have chosen to join together' in urging them to vote for Kerry in Michigan's Feb. 7 presidential caucus.

<snip>

Is Blanchard worried that Republicans, should they seek to create mischief in the Feb. 7 caucus by exercising the easy option of declaring themselves as Democrats for the day, will vote for Dean, perceived by many Republicans as the easiest Democrat for Bush to beat'

'I'm not worried about that,' he said. 'I'm more worried about early voting by Internet.' Hundreds already have. If front-runner Dean or others falter or are dropouts before Feb. 7, those Michiganians who already have voted for them 'can't change their minds,' Blanchard notes. 'They're stuck.'
