Last minute volunteer opportunities (please read text before posting)
Edited on Mon Nov-01-04 09:19 AM by blondeatlast
I'm going to try to keep this osmewhat organized by doing it state by state. Please reply to YOUR STATE'S reply to my original message.

Any ooportunities you know of, post them here with links.

You won't regret it, even if it's an hour or so. Every warm body is needed.

Post 'em if you got 'em!

Phone numbers are a good idea as well; I'm sure they are flooded with requests.

TELL THEM YOU CAME FROM DEMOCRATIC UNDERGROUND! Let's make ourselves a force for GOOD!

69. I'm making phone calls tomorrow in Phoenix.
When I called to volunteer I was told that the Dems left too many absentee ballots on kitchen tables in past races. I assume I'll be calling people who requested an absentee to make sure they turn in their ballots. They were looking for people to work a minimum of a 2 hour shift. Hours are 8:00 am-6:30 pm. I'm going to confirm everything today. If I find out anything different I'll post here.

Sadly, the Dems haven't backed him with any vigor; he'd make an outstanding Senator.

59. Here's what to do
Call up the Boston office--(617) 367-1551. If you don't get through, you should call back in a minute or so. There ARE people answering the phones, but sometimes we are so flooded that calls get missed.

You can sign up to go to Maine or NH tomorrow through a car pool or by driving yourself. The jobs at these locations include driving people to polls, phone banking, holding signs, and last minute GOTV canvassing.

You can also sign up to phone bank from the Boston office. If you're far from Boston, we can put you in touch with phone banking or visibility events closer to you.

I'm just an intern at the Boston office, so this isn't "official". As of a couple days ago, this is the drill. If you call and something has changed, I'm sorry.

25. Got Legs? (All states)
Got a pair? Ready to use them to put John Kerry and John Edwards in the White House?

If your election day schedule isn't full, call your local Democratic party headquarters, and tell them you want to go door-to-door on election day and get out the vote among registered Democrats.

Your local democratic party will set you up with a walking list. Some have quite sophisticated software that can target strong Kerry supporters, making your efforts even more productive. I was given a list of 150 in my precinct. It's going to be a nice fall day, and I'm going to get on my bike and knock on each of these doors and do my best to encourage these people to vote.

Does it matter?

Yes, it WILL make a difference. In a tied race, it comes down to turnout. Even if you think you are in a safe state, and especially if you are in close state. Even if you're in a state you've been told is red (like my North Carolina), your effort is now desperately needed.

We can no longer leave it up to the party, the candidate or any of the traditional apparatus. They've taken us this far, now we must return the favor. This election will be won on the depth of the team. Unlike football (Yeah, Packers!), in this contest each team can field as many players as it can muster -- and we need every last player.

YOU have to be on the field on election day!

Karl Rove has his 72-hour strategy vote-turnout machine, we can't leave it to others to respond on our behalf or we will lose. That's what this plea comes down to.

If each and every one of us mobilizes on election day, we win!

Your lunch hour or the whole beautiful day, you have to spend some time in the trenches. Imagine it: a flood of Kerry supporters, visiting their fellow citizens, down oak-lined sidewalks, across dusty field, up and down apartment steps and down the old two-lane highway.

Your encouraging reminders will prod people to vote. Your support of Kerry will enforce their belief that they're making the right decision and motivate them to vote. Hopefully you'll talk to many people who are damn sure going to vote anyway. But you will be what tips the balance -- the one that gets a few more Democratic voters to the polls, times hundreds of thousands.

The Republicans are betting you won't show up!

This election is now in your hands -- more than it has ever been in this long process. You've waited four years for this. We've discussed and argued until we were battered and bruised. And then we united. Now you must carry the ball. Not the collective you, but you the person reading this. Will you show up?

Call your local Democratic Party Headquarters, if your city doesn't have one, your county will. Call them now. Tell them you want to hit the streets with a Democratic voter list and knock on some doors on election day. Tell them when you are available and I guarantee you they'll accommodate you.

Then follow through. Go put a smiling face on the doorsteps of the people who are going to be the margin of victory. Work hard. Come home, flip on the TV and bask in the success of what you have done.

We are on the one-yard line, don't fumble.

74. visibility events
If you aren't driving people to the polls tomorrow, or doing poll watching, there are lots of visibility events going on all around Jackson County. Give the Kerry HQ a call at (816) 822-1702 to sign up (and won't it be great to camp out tomorrow morning at the Fox 4 building on Southwest Tfwy, waving our K/E signs? Hee).
