Are fundies as robotic as they appear?
Living in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the only fundie I know is a pro-gay Marriage, proChoice liberal. (She thinks abortion is murder, but God understands if life puts you in a situation that requires one.)

I have this picture of fundies in the small towns of the midWest and South as being kind of like characters in Night of the Living Dead, marching en masse, driven by some sort of sickness. Will they all turn out to vote for * because their minister told them to? Do you think fundies will vote in the numbers that Rove expects? Do you have any first hand experience with them?

3. Yes.
and no, I don't think the turnout among fundies will be all that high. They've got 8 kids to homeschool in how to judge your neighbor, fasting to do, faith healing....etc. The only fundy I personally know goes whichever way the wind blows. Late last year she was all for Bush, and yet when we got our sheets for canvassing, their she was, a registered Dem. Go figure.

5. Having been one at one time, YES.
Although I was more an observer and didn't last long. I remember talking to a guy who peppered his speech with, 'Praise the Lord!' every other sentence. I looked into his eyes and was really dismayed. There was nothing there. He had the look of someone who had been thoroughly brainwashed and it creeped me out. Then there was the former drug addict who talked fondly of his escapades when he used to imbibe. Then there was my born-again roommate who tried to kill herself after talking on the phone with my fundie mother--she took two bottles of sleeping pills after my mom recited a scripture that basically called her a 'whore'. I had to call the paramedics. Oh, it was a blast being a fundie.
