Schwarzenegger Star Power Fades for GOP in State Races
By Nancy Vogel
Times Staff Writer

November 1, 2004

SACRAMENTO — Republican hopes that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's popularity would help the party win more seats in the Legislature have faded in the final days before Tuesday's election as Democrats enjoyed a boost from the presidential campaign.

Just weeks ago, Republican officials spoke optimistically about the potential impact of hearty campaigns by Schwarzenegger in behalf of Assembly and Senate candidates. Now, however, even some sources close to the governor concede that the outlook has darkened for Republican candidates and that Democrats could gain a seat.

The Democrats already hold sizable majorities in the legislative chambers: 48 to 32 in the Assembly and 25 to 14 in the Senate, which has one vacancy after Republican William J. "Pete" Knight's death in May.

Poll results for GOP candidates began dropping after the last presidential debate, said Assembly Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield. It's an indication that President Bush's unpopularity with California voters might be weighing down his party's chances further down the ballot.

1. This comment says it all
"I'm hoping for a snowstorm," said Matt Rexroad, who is managing several Republican Assembly campaigns. "Low turnout usually helps us."

5. It's all a show...www.arnoldwatch.org
Arnie's taken more special interest money
than Gray Davis, borrowed more money, passed
on decision-making to ballot initiatives and
played Arnie the Muscleman in his excellent
adventure as Governator.

Can't believe so many got fooled at one time.

7. Arnold was elected...
... as part of a temper-tantrum by Californians. Davis had to pay for the sins of the jackasses who ripped them off.

I'm sure a few Californians thought that he really could fix things. Now that they find that his fix is nothing more innovative than "borrow 15 billion dollars", they are probably realizing they've been had.

They'll get no sympathy from me, however. The idea that a bad actor could come in and do what Davis couldn't is ludicrous. Might as well believe in the tooth fairy and the magic pumpkin :)

9. Media fawning backfires
People complained that Clinton camapigning was all about himself, Arnold has been openly primping his own career with open breaks with party platforms. Does any media infotainment journalist holding the great one's
pool towel go negative on that? Fear and respect for all GOP dunderheads.

Another guy dragging down the lapdog loons with him.

10. Of all the depressing things in American politics
in the last couple of years, even the takeover of Congress and Senate by the Repugs, Schwarzenegger's election has got to be the worst downer. Because so many Dems helped put his big butt in office. One who did so called in to c-span a few weeks ago and said she voted as a Dem for Arnold because of the immigration issue, yet now her family has decided to move out of the state.

I have to admit I agree with Arnold in not allowing illegal immigrants to have legal driver's license, but that's no excuse to put a Repug gropenator in charge of the most populous state - in a recall no less. Also saw a Black college student interviewed during that time and he said he would vote for Arnold because his college tuition costs had skyrocketed and he was upset with Gray Davis for it. Still no excuse not to think and think again what his election portends for the future. Now he's going to be instrumental in getting our Constitution amended so he can run for president. And betcha the California Senators and congressman will go along with it in the spirit of cooperation or just not wanting to lose votes. Watch. It's scary.

Of course California Dems totally ignored the fact the tuition costs and energy prices skyrocketed due to Bush and Bush only. Star quality is all that mattered. Every celebrity who has run for office from California has been a Repug: Eastwood, Arnold, Reagan, the "love boat" guy, the football player, Sonny Bono, ...
