For a couple of reasons.
First, although the America-hating assholes may not actually come out and CALL these people close to them "idiots," it will be evident in their attitude. Their contempt for anything good and just about this country will literally drip from their throats. That's just the way they are. Like the scorpion who stung the crocodile mid-river, they can't help it -- it's in their nature.
Second, we've got a headstart on them. I personally have three former Bush supporters and one former Nader supporter chalked after my name, from just the last 100 hours or so -- and I haven't done any organized campaign-related activities because of my knee. Imagine what the dedicated, organized folks at DFL HQ are up to RIGHT NOW. (Yes, the Repuhblicans are no doubt doing the same thing, but they're disadvantaged for the aforementioned reason -- their contemptuous, America-hating nature, which more people see through than you might think.)
Third, when the sitting president is a motherfucker, the pro-challenger, anti-incumbent memes become that more more easier to propagate and difficult to overtake -- the opposite is true for the anti-challenger, pro-incumbent memes. And Bush is the most motherfucking of the motherfuckers to hold any democratic (or quasi-democratic) national leader's office in modern history. Maybe not in ALL of history, but he's certainly on the top ten list.
Finally, it won't make a difference. Not even a little. Yes, 2000 was decided by a few hundred votes here and there, but this year is not going to be a repeat of 2004. The America-haters can talk to all the "idiots" close to them that they want; it will be a man taking a small pebble and throwing it uphill in the middle of a landslide. For a landslide it will be, and I won't even say you heard it here first, because you know you didn't. If it makes them feel better, fine. Go for it. I certainly wouldn't want to be responsible for a widespread mental health crisis among Republicans (at least insofar as you people HAVE sufficient mental health to be in crisis), so go ahead and enjoy the last 30 hours or so of your deluded hope. Go ahead and have fun tonight, go ahead and vote for Bush tomorrow (or, if you want to vote for a REAL conservative, do what my pizza dude from last night did and write in John McCain), and go ahead and party at the Bush rally tomorrow. When the sun rises on November 3rd, it will still be on a Democratic America.
(Edited to add: Wow, I think that was my 500th post. I didn't even realize it.)
