What states were upsets in 2000? Any?
Which states were considered strong leans for a candidate but went to the other? Any?

I think that Gore realized too late he was behind in Tennessee and W. Virginia, but by the end of October most polls in those states showed Bush ahead, so it wasn't totally surprising that Gore lost them.

I think the big surprise was that early in the evening Ohio was "Too Close to Call" and Gore had given up on that state weeks earlier and pulled out. Had he stayed in and contested it, he might have been president, considering he lost it by less than 4%.

5. Tennessee, West Virginia and New Mexico
Of course, anyone who was familiar with Gore's internal polls knew perfectly well that Tennessee and West Virginia were slipping away. But it was still a surprise to the press.

New Mexico was something of a surprise. Some have speculated that the early call of Florida may have boosted Gore a little out West, where the polls were still open.

Bush ended up winning it by about 3pts
