I'll be honest....Bruce Sprinsteen is depressing me and I haven't |
|
liked most of the songs played by the Kerry campaign....
I'm a Jersey Girl who used to ride up and down the strip in Asbury Park and who's best friend knew Bruce through dating Southside Johnny.
But he's just dragging me down now, can't understand what the hell he is singing and wish he'd liven the pace a bit.
As for the songs on the campaign...Johnny B. Goode, of course, if perfect. But that "Beautiful Day" business is draggy as hell and really doesn't have THAT much energy. The rest of the stuff is non-descript.
You can flame me now.

I'm looking for more energy. I feel like I'm back in 1965.
The recorded No Surrender has got the energy the live acoustic version really lacks.

35. It's not the same for old-time Springsteen fans |
|
OK, saw Bruce front row at the Cap Center/MD for "The River" tour. Went to Central Park for "No Nukes" -- definitely a political event, not banal in the least. During the early 80s, the hallmark of a Bruce concert was the energy. At that time, the set included a good part of "The Wild, the Innocent, and the E St Shuffle" w/ "Rosalita" usually capping an all-out event. Funny thing is -- for many of the songs like "Born to Run", "Rosalita", "Thunder Road", etc -- Hope is On the Way *is* the central message. So I can relate to Gloria's post. Having listened to Bruce's music for 20 yrs+, I prefer the old school delivery of the message.

It is very inspiring. The only thing better would be Bob Dylan (my personal musical hero).

|
I think he speaks to the 35-60 crowd in a meaningful way.
I do wish his songs were a bit livelier on the campaign trail, but I can understand the gravity of his message. Frankly when you think about it, after the past four years, singing "Born in the USA" must make him sick to his stomach. * has ruined all that it means to be American. It is Kerry's promise to bring us back to where we belong, prouder and stronger. Integrity will return.

31. Think of it this way -- Bruce came to Kerry |
|
Kerry didn't go to Bruce. So we're kind of "stuck" with his style. I agree that Bruce Springsteen has a Bob Dylan-like quality. Translation: melancholy for the most part. But I remember that when the Dem Convention played the traditional "up" music, TDS referred to it as "dance party". :)
I'm not listening to the rally right now, but I think campaigns need to have the right mixture of "up" songs (Don't Stop Thinkin' About Tomorrow), angry songs (Eminem's Mosh -- well, maybe something a bit tamer), and melancholy/folk songs (Turn, Turn, Turn?).

|
I've never been a Springsteen fan. But I'm listening to him now. Now that I know he has a heart as well as a brain to match. I'm more upset with the discovery of Alice Cooper's conservatism.
Seeing different styles, generations, skin colors, religions, but yet all standing together. That is what it's all about. I have to fight off the tears. It's just the opposite when I hear a brainless Bush supporter blabbing away about why they think George is their candidate. It's a divided argument. And I have to fight off the hatred that wells up.

I'm one of these people who can put one song on continuous loop for hours when I'm in the right mood for it, and I've done that recently with a lot of Bruce's stuff. He performed "No Surrender" and "Promised Land" at the rally in Columbus this past Thursday, and I thought they were perfect. But, not everyone has the same taste in music. It's no crime....

recorded version of "No Surrencer" used, but the acoustic stuff doesn't seem quite right...just lacks energy. Hell, he's reading the lyrics off a page....just seemed a bit like droning esp. since the lyrics were practically indecipherable because of the sound.
I can't imagine anyone "dancing" to this tonight....
