7. It's raining here ...
but unseasonably warm. There were lots of middle-class elderly people voting where we vote, this morning. If it hasn't discouraged them, I wouldn't worry about turnout anywhere else!

8. It's a good thing
THIS year, we aren't going to let a silly thing like rain stop us. BUT, would you stand in the rain if you didn't think your guy was going to win anyway? Nope. That's what I think.

About 52 degrees, light breeze.

Perfect Chicago voting weather.

You can almost see the spirits of departed Democrats rising up to vote... ;-)

16. It's okay,
we got snow over all the * country in NM. That should help us. It looks like it's raining in WA and OR, but you guys are used to that, right? It shouldn't hurt us.

You're right, the snow should help. In fact that's exactly what happened in 2000: Major snowstorms throught most of the state, and only Dem-leaning Alberquerque was ready for it. Gore wins in a squeaker.

That IS good news...!

22. Geez, you're right
I heard there was a chance of rain tonight, and I was worried about long lines after work, and that's why I voted early. Actually, I voted early because I couldn't stand the thought of not being able to put up an "I Voted" avatar until this evening!

23. my rain story
Edited on Tue Nov-02-04 09:48 AM by bigtree
Always, as they drew near to their valley, Marmot would begin to sing to himself, softly at first, then graduating into a full-throated, warbled song in some forgotten language. He would then begin to tell a story. Some he told about his birth land. Others made little sense to Mikito. They were more like riddles or lessons from the old man’s life in the Pueblo, a long time ago.

Their path was sloping east now, as they descended into their forest, single file. Marmot began his chanting. “Catoo, camaat. Catoo, camaat.” he called to the rain. The women laughed among themselves, hiding their faces in mock modesty.

He continued his song. “Cahoof, cahoosit!” he sang to no one in particular. “Catoo, camaat cahoosit!” As he sang, his arms flew into the air, pulling at some unseen object. The old man always got energy from his songs and he would breathe deeply several times before he would speak again. Then he started his story:

~”When the world was new the Spirits of all living things looked upon the Earth with favor, and they cast their images over all the land and watched their shadows and reflections from above. They saw themselves in the clear waters. They left their imprint in the fertile ground, pulling their souls up to stand above the mountains. They stretched up to the sky, only to spill back to Earth again and scatter, like rain. The Spirit of Man also cast its impression onto the Earth. Its likeness saw its reflection everywhere. And the reflections saw themselves in every living thing. But Man’s image would not reflect back to the Spirit above. Soon, no living thing would reflect back to where they came, content to reflect only among themselves. So, the Spirits left their images, forever to roam the Earth, never to touch their Spirit guardians or be touched by them, except in their dreams, as long as they lived.”

Marmot stopped walking and spoke in a hushed voice. All were listening closely now and leaned in to hear: “The Spirits still cast their images down to Earth, hoping to catch their reflection there. When it rains,” he whispered, “they come and go, as they please. After the rain stops, all of the impressions that remain inhabit the Earth until they die.”

The weeping sky recovered, for the moment, and all around was drizzly and bent. Marmot was chanting softly to himself again. He was leading the company now. All but Mikito fell far behind, sodden and mesmerized after Marmot’s tale. Around them, new life, borne up from the imbued ground, looked upon the Earth for the first time and was content. Mikito looked out at the horizon, the black line of clouds receding and the brilliant orange skyline below, and he pondered every dewdrop along the rest of the way home.
