I come from a blended family but it wasn't just retention. Every year on election day he and my mom made the same pact: neither one of them would vote since they cancelled each other out. “This time we’re really gonna do it.” They’d say. My mom was a Democrat and my Dad a Republican. Sometime in the evening, before the polls closed, every year without fail, each of them would come up with some lame excuse to get out of the house. They needed to run an errand. Go to the store, take books back to the library, ANYTHING. And each one of them, denying to the other, but knowing they were not really getting away with it, went to the polls...and cancelled the others vote.

Age, and with it its attendant wisdom, with a little help from Reagan, turned my dad into a liberal democrat in his 50s.

I miss him.
