A little bit of good news from down South |
|
An old shipmate and very good friend of mine who is a staunch conservative and very religious man, emailed me this morning and said he voted for Kerry and the Democratic congressman in our District. He said he doesn't always see eye to eye with Senator Kerry but bush and "his crowd" were just way too dishonest. Unfortunately our electoral votes (Mississippi) will go to the fascist but the popular vote will be very impressive for President elect Kerry.

The guy at my poll said it was "triple what we usually have in the mornings"... Everyone at my office who went reports standing in lines (unless they happened to have a name in a short-letter line, like S-Z...) and having trouble finding a parking spot... So, yeah, big turnout, even here in this red state.

I'm in Pearl River County and the voting is the heaviest I've ever seen it. We enjoy slipping into Gulfport to shop at Keesler and at the CB base and drop a few quarters at the Casinos. We are half way between Gulfport and New Orleans. Great Geography.

3. I vote in a little volunteer fire station on a country road |
|
and there were cars parked up and down the highway for a quarter mile. I had about a 15 minute wait but that was the biggest crowd I'd ever seen in this little rural spot on the map. Across the border in New Orleans turnout is also very heavy. Record heat this morning and big rains forecast for the PM.

5. Chamblee/Northeast Atlanta GA varies |

We were re-districted away from my son's elementary school (yay, Huntley Hills Elementary!), but his after-school daycare is nearby - when I dropped him off this AM, the line was VERY long; longer than I've ever seen in a lifetime of political involvement - *my* polling place was somewhat busy, but not crowded - it's closer to the hi-end suburbs of Dunwoody and Sandy Springs (NE Atlanta)

that his polling place was PACKED elbow-to-elbow with voters, and not of the Bush persuasion either.

While I was standing in line to vote this morning, two teen aged girls came by selling donuts. They were both wearing Kerry/Edwards shirts and nothing was said or done to discourage them. This was in NE Atlanta in a precinct that is reliably liberal. Still - it was so nice to see the young tending the correct way.
It left me wishing I had worn my "Women for Kerry" pin which I had left off to be on the safe side.
