Win or lose we still have Kerry in 2008, but what do the republicans have? They can't run Giuliani he would scare all the women and children. I can't think of anybody that could beat Kerry. Maybe Powell but would the south vote for him.

19. I would LOVE for Santorum to run in '08
He would get MAULED.

Against a woman's right to choose.

Against a raise in the minimum wage.

Against hate crime laws.

Against the COPS program.

Against smaller classroom sizes.

Against fuel efficiency standards.

Against allowing importation of drugs from Canada.

Against increasing tax deductions for college tuition.

The only real hope they have is running a moderate, but the "Christian" base will NEVER allow anyone like Giuliani or Schwartzn. or any moderate who's not one of them to get the nomination.

Maybe they'll try to run Jeb? Afterall, wasn't he tagged as the "smart" one?

Given that both Bush presidents came into office when things had an element of stability and then proceeded to run everything into the ground I don't think the general public would be willing to allow anyone from the currently existing generations take office anytime soon.

18. This is where it gets interesting....
The Republicans have taken a sharp tilt to the Right. If they go for a moderate (Guliani, McCain) they risk alienating there religious base. If they go extreme it will be like watching Keyes on a much larger scale. Either way, the Republicans have a lot of soul searching to do as which way they want to go. Either way, they are probably screwed!

You have to keep in mind that none of the other guys mentioned in the thread could win the primary. McCain is also too old, has pissed off too many key party officials who you need on your side to win a Republican primary by his failure to blindly hold party line, and he will continue to piss off Republicans by agreeing with moderate aspects of Kerry's agenda. The gay porn pin-up cannot legally run and there is a zero-point-zero chance of a constitutional amendment. Giuliani is pro-choice, pro-gay-marriage, pro-social services, and his the-worst-day-in-US-history-was-the-best-day-of-my-political-life! line will be awfully cold and stale in 2007.

You can cross McCain, Guiliani, and porn-star off your list.

That is their only hope. Jeb says he's not running, but who believes that lying sack of shit?

Giuliani, Arnold and my man Mittens have their eyes on the job, but the fundies will NEVER agree to a pro-choicer from a blue state.

Most of the others would alienate every moderate, unless they tone down their rhetoric.

McCain would unite the party, but would they ever nominate him?

between a "moderate" and a nutjob in the primaries. It could split the party wide open and leak votes to a third party. Hopefully the nutjob will win and we cruise to reelection. Something like McCain, Guiliani or Schwarzenegger v. Santorum.

and it won't help that he doesn't have a prayer of carrying his home state.

Keep in mind that the surrogates who the Republicans trot out during the general election are chosen to appeal to suburban moms and cross-over voters and unstable undecided voters. These are the kind of guys who get crushed by the religious zealots who drive the Republican primary process.

60. Hagel could maybe pull it off as an "insurgent" candidate
Much in the same way that Wilkie won the nomination in 1940 - lots and lots of grassroots effort.

That said, he would NOT be popular with the Neosluts, and the Thumpers would be moderately supportive at best, since Hagel's never been that much of a "Fags & Flags" Republican. He might be able to work with "traditional" Republicans and fiscal conservatives, though.

Whether or not he wins the primaries will be another matter. If the republicans are smart they'll choose someone else, otherwise Jeb Bush will be the sacrificial lamb that Dole was in '96. The American people have had enough of the Bush family. However the BFEE has a stranglehold over the republican party and might still be in charge in 2008 even if * loses tonight.

You think B* pisses his knickers when he gets asked a disrespectful question? Frist or Giuliani wouldn't make it through 4 primaries without shooting somebody. President Kerry would send the limo out for those guys.

I'd take any of them on. Just goes to show how utterly bereft of talent the GOP is. Pataki is probably the most competent of the lot,and has a tad of the post-9/11 glow. But I've lived within half a day's drive of Albany all my adult life, and I'm still not sure I'd even recognize Pataki's voice if I heard it unannounced. He's really a man who doesn't leave footprints.
