Big turnout on campus at the University of Oklahoma |
|
After I voted (my polling place is just across the street from the dorms) I decided to ride my bike around campus, because someone I ran into at the polls told me they had huge lines at the polls in the dorms.
I wasn't even aware they had polling places on campus (they didn't when I lived on campus), so I wanted to check it out. I could never get in to the buildings to verify the huge lines, but I can say that I have never seen so much election activity on this campus. (I've been on campus for the last 2 presidential elections as well.) There were huge groups of people walking over to the polls, sporting "I Voted" stickers, or catching rides on the golf carts that are running from the ovals (where the classroom buildings are) to the polls.
I did see some repubs (they set up rides as well, and were calling to students in a bullhorn), but I didn't see anybody gathering around them. I did, however, see a couple of golf carts loaded down with dems (judging by overheard comments). Lots of minorities involved too.
The heavy turnout among the youth is NOT a myth.

1. Same at University of West Florida |
|
LOTS of students with "I Voted" stickers.
and LOTS with Kerry/Edwards buttons, stickers or shirts.
The Panhandle is heavily repuke.
But if Kerry splits the vote here - he wins the state.
It's making my head swim...

was trying desperately to discount the reality of the swell of new young voters on msnbc.
But I think more and more people 18-29 are agreeing with the lady holding up that sign. And this year they will vote in much bigger numbers than ever before. I definitely believe that it's more than just hype.
