U.S. Sen. John Kerry, locked in a battle for the lead among Iowa caucus candidates, tried Friday to separate himself from the field with his environmental and tax plans.

Recent polls show Kerry near the top of the caucus pack. The news was no surprise to many of the Democrats in Waverly on Friday. "People are finally realizing that he has a terrific message," said Carl Meyer, 62. Marilyn Dose, 65, said Kerry's range of experience attracted her. Kerry talked about plans to give every American access to health care and ways to encourage the development of new energy sources to replace oil. He also criticized front-running opponents Howard Dean and Dick Gephardt, who have said they want to roll back all of President Bush's tax cuts.

Asked how he would appeal to younger voters, Kerry said he stood for many of the causes that most appeal to a new generation of voters, such as the environment and fighting big business. He talked about staging peace protests after his return from the Vietnam War.
"I've been there. I see some other candidates in this race who talk about it, but where were they when we were fighting these fights?" he said. "Where were they when we were out there on Earth Day 1970 trying to fix the environment in this country?"

Fantastic Kerry coverage in today's Des Moines Register. Finally a story that mentions Kerry's anti-war efforts in the same breath as his Vietnam heroism -- and then segues right into his life-long battle to protect the environment.
