Voting in a small coastal Alabama town
We vote at a community center. 100 year old building. Tin roof, whitewashed clapboard walls. Big front porch. No campaign signs. Not even at the required 30' from the front door. Ours was the only bumper sticker I saw.

It's a relatively small, rural precinct. Been voting there for 11 years. Never had to wait, just walk in and vote.
But not today.

The lot was almost full at ten o'clock this morning. We thought we'd avoid the on-the-way-to-work crowd. The line stretched out the door and all the way down the porch. Even so, we were only in line for about 15 minutes. During that time a heavy rain shower blew through. We were grateful for the porch.

Chatted with one of the poll workers. She'd arrived at 6:30 to find 25 or 30 people already in line. She went ahead and opened early. Why Not?

Voting took about a minute. It doesn't take long to line in the arrow for "STRAIGHT DEMOCRATIC PARTY".

I was voter #514. Miz t. was #515. In the mid-term election only about 300 total voted here.

I'm not especially encouraged by the high local turnout. This is still a heavily repug area. But I am encouraged by the apparently high national turnout. This bodes well for us.

1. Same here in Homewood, Trof
I have never seen this type of turnout in Alabama before. I wonder if that helps us in Alabama, or does that mean that the GOP voters are very worried.

2. Just wondering: Are you in Gulf Shores?
If you are, you're so lucky. I was there vacationing this summer and it's a wonderful place.

5. Ain't no more Gulf shores.
Glad you saw it before Ivan. Pretty much trashed the place. It'll take a while before our tourist industry is up and running again.
I'm in Foley about 10 minutes from the outlet center.

3. Same In Mississippi
Previous elections, I'm in and out in two minutes. Today, I had to wait in line for about 15 minutes. That's significant cause there aren't that many citizens in this county. But, I haven't gotten any indication that votes are going for Kerry.
