Racism frankly was part of it, the Reagan Dems believed Reagan that their problems where do to welfare moms and the like but that is wearing thin on them.

2. They ARE the welfare people now

A hell of a lot of Reagan Democrats are the ones in need of Government Assistance and the soup lines are long. Welfare got reformed and the country still declined. The Great Depression teaches us something very valuable: when you put white America out on the street, they see just how much bullshit that social prejudice is. There is only one real color in this country: green (denomination non-specific).

4. Given that Reagan was the most conservative president ever at that time

and he wreaked havoc on the foundation of Democratic principles, Reagan Democrat would seem to be oxymoronic. I'm too young to easily remember that time, but my grandpa says that Reagan was an obvious faker and any self-respecting Dems who voted for him were effectively shooting themselves.

I mean, seriously. Even Nixon said that Reagan's economic platform was devoid of the compassion for the poor and disabled that is necessary for government.
