Chicago Sun-Times: "Unheard of" turnout
http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/turnout02.html

<snip>

Republican Alan Keyes, accompanied by his wife and daughter, placed his ballot at a municipal garage in Calumet City, where he was heckled by a man who spewed curses at him.

<snip>

Voters certainly seemed energized, as lines could be seen stretching outside polling places around the city. ‘‘The most surprising thing of the whole election is the amount of crowds we’ve had this morning,’’ said Tom Leach, spokesman for the Chicago Election Board. ‘‘People waiting in line to vote when the polls open.’’

In fact, said Leach, at some polling places a quarter of the entire roster of registered voters had cast their ballots in the first hour. ‘‘That’s just unheard of,’’ he said.

<snip>

At a polling place on the South Side, a number of Republicans made it clear that they weren’t so much voting for Obama as against Keyes.

‘‘I don’t like him all that much, but Keyes is just a loon,’’ said Josh Hanna, a 29-year-old attorney. ‘‘We don’t need his crusade.’’

3. "Voters certainly seemed energized"
Hmm...must be the Republicans. Rush said only the Republicans are energized enough to vote.

OH! To be a fly on the wall at the Hannity or Limbaugh households tonight!!

4. People in Cal City are always spewing curses.
I think it's par for the course.

But I can't wait to see Obama's numbers tonight. Will he top 80%??

6. Worst Senatorial Candidate Ever?
Figures that Keyes would be heckled when he went to vote for himself. Not only is he a foaming-at-the-mouth wingnut, but a carpetbagging wingnut at that. Some enterprising soul should look up the biggest margin of defeat for a major-party senatorial candidate. 'Cos I have a feeling that Keyes just might break that record tonight.

7. Keyes is already crying that
the whole Illinois GOP is corrupt. NO Alan, it's that they don't like having crazy people forced on them by the likes of Karl Rove.

14. I thought that same thing when I saw Obama's keynote speech at
the convention. Wouldn't he make a SPLENDID running-mate when Edwards moves up? After that, he'd be positioned to top the ticket - wouldn't THAT be cool? Onward and Upward, Obama!!!

13. Need to dig up archives
The Chicago Sun needs to bring out the front page article it did when Truman won a second term. It would be an interesting comparison.

15. if you're talking about "Dewey beats Truman"
that was the Tribune, which eclipsed that embarrassment recently by endorsing Bush again.

The right-wing Sun-Times actually regretted endorsing the Worst President Ever in 2000, and endorsed Kerry this time.
