if turnout was huge, Kerry would win, and we have exactly that?

12. I agree voter turnout is the best indicator
I live in TX, and I never seen so many minorities and women in my neighborhood, until I went and voted.

7. Turnout
Look at the turnout. Ignore everything else right now and focus on that. It should tell you a great deal if your look at it vrs previous elections.

11. Early reports
on turnout and leaked exit numbers look good. We can be cautiously optimistic. But it is to early to tell.

16. media talks about record turnout
That means people are angry and are voting for change. People do not get motivated to vote for status quo.

17. I'd like to know the same thing, but all I'm seeing here is
Premature Jubilation. I suppose its too early to know. Feels good yucking it up and celebrating, but its a bit hollow to participate in this until the Fat Lady has Sung.

27. It's a good point, but the broad response
Edited on Tue Nov-02-04 05:01 PM by DrBB
..is an indicator. No one's comparing today against 2002 much. Just from a completely subjective p.o.v., there was a LOT of positive energy here on DU about how things looked right up to the midterm election, but checking in throughout the day it went grim around here VERY early on and stayed that way. Least that was my recollection.

I can't stand to watch the tube at these times, sensitive soul that I am, so I check in here and a few other places to take the temperature. The signals during the first debate, for instance, were amazing and accurate to how things came out.

None of this is Matcom's "hard" evidence, but man, I really prefer seeing that "bandwagon" mood here than otherwise. And it's not just here--it's looking that way on other major lefty sites.

And as Rove knows, the "bandwagon effect" is IMPORTANT.

I feel a LOT like I did watching the last game of the World Series. A 3 point lead is not much to hang on to, but it kept seeming more and more like, oh my god, they might just....

19. Look at it this way--would you rather be supporting Bush or Kerry right
now?

Kerry--gained ground since debates, slightly up in Harris and Zogby polls (the most accurate last time), was up in battleground states, and is WAY UP in the exit polls. Also, huge turnout historically good for Dems and challengers (we're both this time).

Bush--"be afraid, be very afraid," "I'm a war-time pResident" (forget about the fact that I started the war). Bush backers FOX and Novak et al. looking grim.

No fluff . . . Kerry is cruising at this point.

26. Heard someone from inside the Kerry war room
Sounded pumped. Said their internals look good - turnout looks fab in Dem areas. I don't really care about early exit polls, but reading the faces, reading the spin - I think we are in good shape. We have to keep up the GOTV effort. Really important on the west coast. Important for folks out there not to think it's okay to vote Nader or stay home. We want a mandate and we have to remain vigilant. All the people I "adopted" for election day got to the polls and voted Kerry. I'm pumped here.

28. High turnout is good for us
From the Chicago Sun-Times:
http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/turnout02.html

<snip> Voters certainly seemed energized, as lines could be seen stretching outside polling places around the city. ‘‘The most surprising thing of the whole election is the amount of crowds we’ve had this morning,’’ said Tom Leach, spokesman for the Chicago Election Board. ‘‘People waiting in line to vote when the polls open.’’

<snip> In fact, said Leach, at some polling places a quarter of the entire roster of registered voters had cast their ballots in the first hour. ‘‘That’s just unheard of,’’ he said.

29. I figure we will know around December 15th....
I don't get the jubiliation here. Some exit polls at 2 o'clock basicallly say "it's really close" and we start popping champagne corks. It's strange.

30. Extremely high, if not record-breaking, turnout everywhere.
Including here in most-likely-Bush Billings, Montana. The repukes are energized, too. I just hope to God that we are more so.
