I just met Janene Garalifilo and Joan Jett at the Dean Camp/Iowa.
Edited on Sat Jan-17-04 08:02 PM by liberalnurse
The two just got back from giving a concert at Drake University, Des Moines, IA. and came into Dean Head Quarters. They both expressed their support for Dean and shared an interesting story of their experience at the concert.

...Out of the blue.*bush supporters came in as disruptor's! They were dressed in suits, cropped hair, *bush signs and were chanting "bush, bush, bush...There were about 30 of them ....they pushed themselves up to the stage...Several shoved Joan Jett ,she did not faultier she got right in their faces and kept on belting out her tune. Dean supporters quickly came to her rescue.... we are united.

The media was all over this at the concert and afterwords with interviews with both gals.

Joan and Janene are energizing democrats! They rocked hard at Drake, imprinting a memorable event to tell my grandchildren.

I sense Dean is a political threat to *bushies.. It will be "Clash of the Titan" come this November.

Oh, its a bit ...no it's damn cold here tonight...I do this for Dean, I do this for I want to take my country back....

3. Thats cool!
I have sort of a crush on Jeneane Garofolo(thats probably more info than anyone needed) and Joan Jett was quite a rocker at one time. She seems to take no crap from people like the disruptors and thats a good thing. And another great thing is that the bushies are running scared. Fight 'em like Joan Jett did, that may be all they understand. And I'm not necessarily a Dean supporter, but its good to see people rising up and fighting back.

4. Today I heard that a Republican friend of the family will vote for Edwards
if he gets nominated.

Meanwhile, in IA, it sounds like some Republicans find Dean very polarizing.

9. Some repubs find bush polarizing
and are supporting Dean:

Warren and Don in Grundy Center

snip>
I sat down at the first open seat, next to Warren Feller, a retired merchant, and Donald Stickler, a retired farmer.

‘I just think we need a change,’ Warren said, ‘From the beginning, he strikes me as a good solid individual. He’ll do what he says. He makes good sense. He’s talking the right stuff – and another thing, he’s not from the establishment.’

During the speech, when Governor Dean was talking about the importance of standing up against the war, he leaned over to me, “And that’s another thing. I was in World War II, I was in France. I know what war is, and I don’t want any more of this one.”

“I’m going to caucus,” he said, “for this guy.’

“I’m going to stand up there and say I’m for him.” He figures he knows what caucus will be like, because he’s been before, but “this is the first time for a Democrat. “Last time I was at caucus I was a republican.” He’s retired now, but worked for 40 years as “a merchant on Main Street” of Grundy Center.

After the speech, he leaned over to Don and said, “Who do you think we can get?”

Don said, “well there’s me, and you, and your wife and maybe my wife …. “

Most would have said that they find Dean threatening. http://atlblogs.com/republicansfordean/
I think it all depends on the breed of Republican you are dealing with.

Menwhile in IA most people, democrat and republican compare Edwards to an aging refuge from Tiger Beat Magazine.

27. Not appropriate to post that here
While I am pleased for your candidate and his ability to swing votes outside our party, I think this was an inappropriate place to post your account. Hear me, John Edwards is my #2 guy and I would be THRILLED to have him running against Bush, but my point to you, dear poster, is that this is clearly a Dean thread, posted by a most enthusiastic and dedicated supporter, and it would seem more appropriate to simply offer commentary regarding the theme of the thread.

Respectfully,
Robin

Yes, indeed the enthusiasm was one of where you know you physically feel beat...but it feels so good too! The day of canvasing had its treats after a hard, cold days work. The jamming was a great way to warm up!

13. Yes, thats true, she was singing the Star Spangled Banner.
The *bushies were not run off as we let them make a scene....Media was there and it makes press. The looked goofy in my opinion. They carried a cardboard poster of *bush for the "life-like" sensation they crave.

Oh, right. I forgot there is now a "cultural movement" , or so I've been told by wingnut columnists, to stop comparisons between ChimpCo and The Third Reich. I wonder how much more of this shite will see before the election.

12. can't stand janeane garafolo
she's not funny and is always seeking attention. while i respect her stance on the war, she's such a hip indie-rocker that denounces anything mainstream. and she tends to be divisive - many of the people i used to hang out with in school were like her - most of them are trust fund kids who live in fancy lofts in nyc and complain about the world yet remain apathetic.

sorry - i just had to say it.

30. I can't stand her as a "comedian" or when she whines about not...
getting work (MAD TV took her to task for this in a brilliant sketch a few years ago), but she has been a very articulate and eloquent critic of the current regime. I wish that she would go into politics and leave comedy alone. She is not funny.

39. Janeane Garafalo...
Female actress/stand-up comic with a strong liberal track
record and a pretty good string of movies behind her.

Off-hand, I can think of: "Dogma", "The Truth About Cats
and Dogs", and "Mystery Men", but I'm sure IMDB or other
posters can name more films.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000413/

We're glad to have her on Dr. Dean's side!

41. RW Nuts in Iowa City are infamous for such crap
These are the same folks who got sued by Matt Groenig for using Bart Simpson (TM) in an ad against homosexuality. Incidentally Iowa City has the 2nd largest GLBT population on a per capita basis in the country (SF is the largest). Those idiots are just idiotic. I hope Jett presses charges for assult. There is no call for such behavior.
