1. What a nice story Pete, thanks
It reminds me of this story I read by Mark Shields of a dem candiate for governor of Ohio whose crew remembered him saving them and etc, who knows it may be a story about Kennedy. Thats a great story, thanks.

2. I saw it, he was awesome.
He seems to be really rolling in Iowa. Good luck to John. He would make a great president.

3. Kerry is such a great man and a great American.
I would be so proud to have him as my president. I'm a Clark supporter, but would easily support Kerry if he got the nomination.

Can you imagine being able to be proud of our president again? How wonderful that would feel?

9. Oh man, I've been wondering how that would feel
I've been working on the Kerry campaign for a year, and met him a few times, and what I've felt each time is that if this guy were in the White House I could hold my head up again when they play the national anthem at the ball game.

For what it's worth, I'd feel the same way with Clark.

Also Edwards and Dean, for that matter.

4. Reminds me of JFK's PT109 heroism.
If anyone wants to understand why JFKennedy had the character to be president, read about what he did during WWII.

BTW AP, I saw that Edwards ad you or chimpymustgo posted, I really liked it. I like Kerry and Edwards best after Kucinich. I say Kerry has a lot in common with Kennedy honest.

11. That ad is very interesting. It has power. But I've seen more powerful ads
Edited on Sat Jan-17-04 08:26 PM by AP
What it really has in an appropriateness for the moment in the IA campaign.

It says that when the talking is done, it comes down to those simple issues that are listed. And those listed issues are POWERFUL reasons to vote for Edwards.

As for PT109, that medal of honor report (available at the smoking gun) should be required reading for every American. It gives me goose bumps thinking of what Kennedy did to save those men.

He swam off into the horizon having no idea where he was going to find a inhabited island. It is stunning. Even though a movie was made about that, I still don't think it is the part of our shared American story that it should be.

12. Kennedy, its interesting, his bad back made him rejected for the army
Yet his father pulled strings to let him in NOT out, and he did a brave thing. Kerry was brave too it seems. Edwards isnt a war hero but he has done heroic things for everyday people as a lawyer.

24. kucinich also
and gephardt. although i have disagreements on some issues with almost all the candidates i think edwards, gephardt, kucinich did great in how they grew up without much but ended up working on behalf of the people. and i include lieberman in this because his family struggled also and he helped on civil rights, especially going south registering black voters. and while kerry is seen as a war hero, i consider him a hero for things he has done such as marching with woman for women's rights, his work on opposing environmental racism, trying to help get released prisoners their right to vote back.even helping to make relations with vietnam better after the horrible war.

31. Where did you get this info about JFK, John?

his bad back made him rejected for the army...
Yet his father pulled strings to let him in NOT out,

It has always been my understanding that JFKs back problems were a result of the PT109 sinking (he was thrown violently against the cockpit wall). I have never seen any evidence that he had back problems prior to his military service. And I'd always understood that the Navy was his first choice, as he was an avid sailor.

14. It's too bad that he didn't show any political courage during the 2002
Iraq War vote. Kerry screwed that vote just like he did the 1991 one.

While I'll admire his courage in his youth during Vietnam, I have scorn for his performance as a senator during 2 critical war votes.

18. Iraq War vote
There was no vote for the Iraq war

The resolution was to grant the President permission to use force if specific conditions were met. Don't believe me, read it for yourself:

http://usinfo.state.gov/regional/nea/iraq/text/1010res.htm

bush misled the Congress and the American people... by claiming that the IWR conditions had been met... in writing, in the hours before the war:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/03/20030319-1.html

Howard Dean (and anyone else) has misled you when he says "voted for war". He purposely makes this statement (and continues) about the vote for the IWR to mislead America about his position and about the position of fellow Democrats.

I'm tired of having the misleader in the White House and I am sure you are too. Write your candidate and tell him to stop lying about fellow Democrats and the IWR. Remind him that this is bush's war.

20. Wrong. Kerry voted to protect America in 2002.
...Kerry was told by the CIA, the White House, and the Pentagon that Iraq was a threat to the US. That was in 1998 and 2002. Remember Clinton?

BTW: You must not know your history. Kerry voted NO on the Gulf War resolution in 1991. His reason was that the Iraqis were set-up by Poppy Bush to invade Kuwait, giving Bushco reason to establish a military presence near their oil and gold. GOOGLE April Glaspie + Saddam Hussein for details.

22. Re:
I would assume that Larkspur believed Kerry's vote not to support the father's war was wrong.

I cannot recall the specifics of the 1991 vote off-hand but I do suspect that Kerry's involvement with exposing reagan/bush I shenanigans for many years probably influenced his trust in bush I.

16. He was also very active in the Vietnam vets against the war group
When he returned. They(returned Vietnam vets) played a major role in the peace movement back then, a much bigger role than many people realize. I read a book (I forget the name) where he was a prime mover and shaker in that movement. I was impressed...I think it was called "The New Winter Soldiers" (the book) but I am not 100 % sure of that, I read so many. :hi:

21. He was a co-founder
Vietnam Veterans of America and a spokesperson for Vietnam Veterans Against the War. I think they started as one group and then split in two. He testified at the Winter Soldier hearings and was part of Dewey Canyon. He did play a major role. He also was part of the very first Earth Day, helping to organize Boston's Earth Day. And ten years before that he helped with the Freedom Riders to the south. When he speaks about his vision for America, he's talking about his life and what he's been committed to for 40 years.

Dean and Clark seem like phonies to me.

Kerry was meant to win the nomination from the start. This was meant to be HIS election.

to hear a man running for president who sounds honest, intelligent, and dedicated to implementing policies for the average American's benefit. I believe him when he speaks. After 3 years of lies and manipulation, it's refreshing. His courage is unquestioned.

28. I admire that. But, seriously:
one can be a war hero and still not be very brave in normal life in society. Perhaps he's changed, I don't know, but you simply cannot infer one from the other. Besides, people change. What he did decades ago in a particular context is admirable, but has very little predictive value today for the job is pursuing.
