Carter's son says Dean can win in South (endorses Dean)
By Rebeca Rodriguez
San Antonio Express-News

Web Posted : 01/18/2004 12:00 AM

MOVILLE, Iowa — Chip Carter, son of former President Jimmy Carter, on Saturday defended presidential hopeful Howard Dean's ability to win in the South.
"I certainly believe that Gov. Dean is going to sell in Georgia," the younger Carter said in a telephone conference call with reporters. "There are a whole lot of Georgians that opposed the war."
Dean is meeting with Jimmy Carter this morning at his home in Plains, Ga. He also will attend Sunday school and then have a news conference in front of the Plains Inn & Antique store in downtown Plains.
The meeting is not an endorsement, campaign officials have noted. The former Democratic president also met with retired Gen. Wesley Clark, said Chip Carter, who personally is endorsing Dean and has been campaigning in Iowa for three weeks.

1. Forgive me for being argumentative
But your thread title says, "endorses dean". Can you point out what part of this story supports that claim?

4. It's in the article...

That would be this part: "said Chip Carter, who personally is endorsing Dean and has been campaigning in Iowa for three weeks."

Glad to be of help. :hi:

On Edit: I guess the above four post answer that question. Anything else we can do to help?

6. LOL
My bad! I guess I should click on the link before I ask a stupid question. As said Skinner, when in doubt, Google.

Thanks - you were all quite gracious in your response, and I humbly stand corrected.

I think Chip's endorsement is as close to Jimmy's as is possible this early in the race, and I also believe it is with his father's blessing.

Should the nod go to Dean, look for a swift endorsement from the patriarch as well.

9. You know
joe... I think there are a lot more ABBers out there than we realize. I'm looking forward to some unity in our party - and not a moment too soon.

Candidate bashing is something I am not fond of. For one, it speaks poorly of our ability to show clarity of purpose (chimpy go bye bye now), and for two, no one likes the after taste left in their mouth when they are forced to eat their words.

Best of luck to you in IA. Remember no matter WHAT happens, even the big dog took 3rd in IA.

sorry. I don't really know anything about him, and I don't have an ax to grind with him or anything, but he really didn't back up his claim with anything valid

You can say there are "plenty of people" in any state who agree on any issue but that is meaningless because there are more who hold the opposite view.

I'm sure there are "plenty of people" in California who are pro-life and for a flat tax and the elimination of the department of education, but that doesn't mean the state is voting for someone who stands for those causes

16. "He's the only Democrat who can win the South." - Chip Carter

Chip Carter Endorses Howard Dean

President Jimmy Carter's Son Joins Georgia for Dean
"He's the only Democrat who can win the South."
-- Chip Carter
For the past four months, the lawn of a certain home in Decatur has been filled with posters supporting Governor Howard Dean's presidential campaign. The coordinators of Georgia for Dean - a statewide grassroots volunteer organization dedicated to electing Howard Dean in 2004 - talked about the particularly enthusiastic homeowner, but no one knew who it was.
On Monday night at SciTrek in downtown Atlanta, Georgia for Dean hosted a video-linked teleconference with Governor Dean and nine other cities across the country. At one point, the video signal was lost. While the technicians worked to recover the signal, the owner of that Decatur home stepped forward to make an impromptu speech. "When my father won the Nobel Peace Prize..." he began.
"I studied all the candidates," Carter said. "I like what did as governor. He has proven leadership. He has proven his ability to balance a budget, proven his ability with healthcare. I know him personally, and I like him. I think he's the only Democrat who can win the South."

14. Exactly.
There might be a lot of Georgians that don't like the war. But even if 55% or 60% didn't like the war, that wouldn't carry the state for Dean, because I don't think it's a one issue race; there are plenty of voters who don't like Bush's policy on this or that but would not pick Dean over him.

Maybe Florida, West Virginia, or Louisiana... they could be in play, depending on the ticket. But come on. Georgia's not going to the Democratic ticket any more than New York will go Republican.

21. President Carter himself said Dean can win the south
he pointed out that he was the first president from the deep south in 120 years himself and that when he went to Boston in '76 he was asked how he expected to win Massachusetts being from the deep south. Carter pointed out that JFK won a higher percentage of votes from Georgia in 1960 than he did from his own Massachusetts.

It's not about what region your from it is about values and good policies.
