"Unhappy Democrats Need to Wait to Get Into Canada"
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1896&ncid=1896&e=5&u=/nm/20041103/us_nm/election_canada_haven_dc_1

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Disgruntled Democrats seeking a safe Canadian haven after President Bush won Tuesday's election should not pack their bags just yet.

Canadian officials made clear on Wednesday that any U.S. citizens so fed up with Bush that they want to make a fresh start up north would have to stand in line like any other would-be immigrants -- a wait that can take up to a year.

"You just can't come into Canada and say 'I'm going to stay here'. In other words, there has to be an application. There has to be a reason why the person is coming to Canada," said immigration ministry spokeswoman Maria Iadinardi.

So there you have it. Our change needs to come from within. Move to the blue states. Drain the red states of electoral clout.

2. Its not really practical
Its not practical at all to say you will just go to Cananda, unless you are older and can retire there and do not need a visa to work, and have some sort of healthcare.

That being said, California seems to be the Dem haven. So that would be the best option fo rthose seeking progressive refuge.

20. Native Minnesotan here-- Canada's winters aren't that bad
Most of the heavily populated areas in Canada are actually further south then we are in MN. In fact, almost all of MN's winter weather comes down from Canada, and we see several "Alberta Clippers" per season (btw, and Alberta Clipper is a huge snow squall that dumps anywhere from 1-3' of snow, and brings subzero temperatures and windchills).

In fact, both Vancouver and Toronto have milder winters than we do.

Canada's not so bad. Except for that metric crap. :)

24. And much too crowded already
I live here so I know. I grew up in the snow and ice (Ohio) and have a hard time with the heat. Canada sounds like a great option, but my first choice to get the hell out of a nearly fascist America would be Ireland. I think they would take me.

if i move to california (or stay in IL), they are still going to want me to pay for Operation Iraqi Quagmire and keep my chin up when they ask my kids to go fight it. No thanks. I'll get in line.

4. Canadian immigration is easy
As long as you have a degree and a profession of some kind, you're in. The question is - can we do anything here to make this country more like the country we want to move to? Don't know, man ... the fucked up situation is still too fresh in my mind.

9. Right -- you have to move to the swing states FIRST -- but only
those swing states that are "donor states." After they have majorities, then you can move to a true-blue state.

7. If you have a family connection to support you...
you can cross the border, pay the fee, and wait to get a work permit.

That's what we're probably doing. You can either apply from inside or outside the country.

8. I have no family there, most people don't
And they signed some pact that the US is considered a "safe" country so I don't think most can claim refugee status.

12. same here
we don't have family, but I have a close friend whose family is scattered throughout ON and has offered us indefinite refuge until we get jobs. I'll let you know where we land - I refuse to pay for George's Folly, or donate my kids to it.

13. Both my paternal grandparents were british subjects of Canada.
I saw the application for U.S. citizenship in a scrap-book my mother has. Would that get me ahead in the line at all?
I have often thought aboot moving to northern B.C. or the Yukon territory just to get close to nature and enjoy my life. Any chance a southerner could make the move?

14. How does one find the official website to get info for applying
Edited on Wed Nov-03-04 08:36 PM by Samantha
What if one simply picked out a university and wanted to attend for four years to obtain a degree? Would there be some kind of temporary resident type status available for attending school? I would have enough money, I believe to simply pay for a place to live, my modest expenses and the tuition. Would that do it?

If you have any info on how I could make this work, please respond. I don't think I can live here the next four years. I am also thinking of other countries that might let me in if I applied to a local university and planned to study for a few years.

Why not move to a blue state? Surround yourself with like-minded individuals and starve the red beast.
