Hmm. I wonder what it would be like to have all gay people go on strike for one day in protest over the antigay measures and rhetoric that fueled the campaign. I mean everyone: doctors, dentists, lawyers, bankers, carpenters, bricklayers, cabdrivers, designers, writers, editors, chefs, salespeople, actors, singers, photographers, etc.

1. Even the 23% that voted for Bush? |
|
Not bloody likely.
But it's a nice idea. ;)

4. If they did, they didn't support the antigay measures |
|
They weren't convinced Kerry would be any better on issues that mattered to them, and remember he opposed gay marriage too. To those voters' minds, that vindicated their vote for Bush.
Don't flame me; I'm just noting their point of view, not mine.

7. I'm not going to flame you |

but I am going to point out a problem with their point of view, as you describe it.
Bush called for and supported a federal anti-gay amendment to the United States Constitution. Kerry voted against this amendment and DOMA. Saying they both believe in civil unions doesn't vindicate a vote for the fear and hate mongering Bush.
If you know a member of the GLBT community who voted for Bush, please vomit on him or her for me. ;) Thanks.

I'm not one of those guys. We are so reasonable on DU; of course what you say makes perfect sense to me and anyone else who cares to think on his/her feet about things more nuanced than their hairdos. But lots of people, gay included, consider themselves apolitical and don't consider the nuances that went into Kerry's approach to civil unions. They probably don't care as much as we do, but of course they'll take for granted whatever rights if any come their way in a few years.
It's all about taking the path of least resistance, deferring pain and securing instant gratification. That gay vote went for Bush, IMHO.
