"Original Values" - My site's statement on yesterday
First of all, I do not accept the result of this election. Nor should you. Over 1 million absentee and provisional ballots have not been counted in FL (and countless others across the country). Electronic voting machines were used throughout Florida with no paper trail making it IMPOSSIBLE to prove fraud. I am EXTREMELY disappointed that Senator Kerry conceded this election, however I can not blame him. It would be a futile waste of time to try to contest this with such a ludicrous margin. The electoral college was supposed to be set up so that no one can win 51% and lose the college. However, as the returns show, 140,000 votes in OH (not enough to go below 51%) could have done just that. That in itself shows fraud in my mind. But it is circumstantial as the premise of the 51% being a guaranteed win was only an untested theory. Again, a waste of time. The fact of the matter is, I SHOULD NOT HAVE THIS DOUBT. That is the simple truth. There MUST be paper trails. There MUST be a uniform procedure for machines nationwide. Once we restore confidence in our election process (after all most polls show up to 65% of the people AREN'T SURE their vote is fairly counted), we can work on ridding this country of the electoral college. However, these machines MUST BE OVERHAULED.
Secondly, it is time for the Democratic party to find its voice. "Moral Values" was a HUGE factor in turnout and they went HEAVILY for bush*. People also have a hard time understanding the democratic philosophy because we don't have that two word catch phrase. I propose "Original Values". It is high time for us to go back to what this country was founded on. Freedom to excercise your religion of choice without interence from others and not having others imposed on you, ESPECIALLY from government. The ideals of a government of, for and by the people, not the corporations. Yes, this is Nader's theme, but he is, and always has been right. The value of personal privacy and the right to live your life in such a way that it makes you happy, so long as you do no harm to anyone else. "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness". These are our "Original Values" as stated in our Declaration of Independence from our original tyrant King George. These are the "Original Values" that must define the Democratic Party. And an aside to those who try to tie abortion in with 'life' - understand this: The re-criminalization of abortion does one thing and one thing only. It causes the usually young mother to use a coat hanger to abort the fetus in an unsafe (and usually unsanitary) way. It does NOT reduce teen pregnancy. It does NOT encourage adoption or the rasing of the child. It puts the health of the mother at risk of death, infection, cervical cancer among other things. THIS is why the right of choice is so defended. Because when abortion is legal you lose possibly one life, depending on your definition. When it is criminalized, you kill or harm two. Have we forgotten the back alley abortions from before Roe v. Wade? If so, we will soon be reminded.
