I live in Tucson, and our turnout was down in large part IMO because of this issue. In South Tucson and some of the other Mexican communites in town, the campaign signs of our very popular Congressman Raul Grijalva had been tagged with graffiti below his name saying "... supports FAGS".
I saw LOTS of these signs.
It's is a major issue and in a political sense, a major problem.

10. As Latin America moves left ... |
|
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 01:00 PM by TahitiNut
... those motivated by power and greed come to Amerika. When the Fascist Batista was overthrown, the fascist Cubans came to Miami, many with the help of organized crime families. When the left took power in El Salvador, the "elite" right-wingers came to Amerika.
When you take a look at the political heritage of those who've come here, you'll realize it isn't mostly the "tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free" ... it's the privileged looking to salvage their privilege and those who're accustomed to that paternalism.
"Illegals"? Cheap labor for Korporate Amerika -- and a handy whip to keep Amerikan Labor leashed and harnessed, creating yet more wealth for the wealthy.

or Latino woman, whichever term you prefer--I can tell you this: although Latinos favor Dems when it comes to social issues like education and health care, many of them are very religious and also very Conservative when it comes to issues like gay rights and abortion. Hispanic men? Despite it being the 21st century, male chauvinism is alive and well among many Hispanic men. They are extremely homophobic. Not everyone of course. But it is still very much a part of the culture. That and the belief that abortion is murder no matter what. So those issues resonate well with that segment (which is pretty big) of the Latino community.

It does get me when poor people are often portrayed as dirty and extremely ugly....sometimes even deformed. I don't understand spanish beyond conversational...my wife likes to watch to brush up on her spanish. If you've never watched a novella...you really can't imagine. They even do period pieces with slaves. It's sort of like what you'd envision television from the 1930's....except we didn't have television.

I find it disgusting and so insulting the way women especially are portrayed. It infuriates me! Most of us are not like that. Yet you see this stupid programming and you think all Latina women and men are just like the stereotypes portrayed. I'd like to take an ax to that stupid Univision channel. But then of course I'd break my television set!

How could that pinche cara de picha guey be getting closer to half of us?
Bear in mind, Latinos are not some sort of monolith. But here are some thoughts:
I do agree that social issues played a role. Many Latinos are socially conservative, and the gay marriage thing and assorted homophobia, plus abrtion, unfortunately works on many of these folks. I don't know how to resolve this dilemma, other than to try to keep the focus on jobs and social services and away from these wedge issues.
War is a tricky issue. When my dad first came to the U.S., he felt a need to be overly "patriotic" in order to allay the suspicions of the Anglo community. On the other hand, we all know that black and Latino men serve disproportionately as cannon fodder in these imperial wars.
Also, there is something about the progressive movement that just doesn't seem to be reaching many minorities. The peace, environmental, social justice movements I have been involved in over the years have almost always been overwhelmingly white, even when the surrounding community itself was diverse. Nader never had much minority support. I think progressivism is widely seen as a white middle-class thing, and we're losing votes to El Pendejo as a result.
Lastly, there is something about outreach. I got my mom and aunts to vote this time around, but they needed to have the system explained to them. They are not dumb, they just grew up with a different system. While the Democratic party and progressives need to reach out more, this is more of an issue of the community getting more involved in educating and turning out the vote. This kind of crap just cannot continue to go on.

This isn't by any means the Queen's Spanish, but:
"cara de picha" means "dickface."
"guey" (pronounced more or less like the English word "way") is a common term of abuse among young, mainly Mexican, men. Probably means roughly "dumbass," but opinions differ.
"pinche" is primarily an intensifier, kind of like putting "fucking" in front of another insult.
Put it all together, and you get "fucking dickface dumbass."

24. It's the hispanic vs. black rivalry, folks! This is HUUUGE. |
|
The democratic party has given it's "minority" leadership positions to blacks, and everybody knows that blacks and hispanics are not exactly friendly groups (I know I'm generalizing here, obviously some are friends) ... the republicans have exploited this group big time and said to them: climb on board and we'll fight for your social values for you.
This is a big time concern as hispanics will soon be the largest minority in the country (they probably already are, if they were all counted as legal).
If we can't win back this group, we are extinct.
