This is nothing but scapegoating and Monday morning quarterbacking. I didn't, and nobody else on this board knew that bigotry would take over this election, and if you did before, then show me the archive...and it BETTER HAVE GARY NEWSOME'S NAME IN IT! If you can't do that, then you are just harping on something you didn't see before, which is disingenuous.
For the record...the FMA started as a petition in 1999...that's 5 YEARS AGO!!!!... this issue has been going on for quite some time, not just over the summer, or when the Mass SC made their decision.
For another record. This wasn't an issue started by gays, or championed by gays. Gay people make up only 10% of the population. We don't have the NUMBERS to drive agendas. So who is bringing it up during election years? One guess.
The Religious Right. Everything concerning gay people is driven by them. We are their red meat.
Place your anger where it belongs.
edit: too many consonants.

1. The hate shown on this board today |
|
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 03:45 PM by transeo
is almost as bad as the hate the right shows us on a regular basis. I thought we were better than that. Now I see this board roaring with hatred toward the lgbt community because of the election, and it is truly horrifying. Well you know what, FUCK OFF!
How dare you tell me that our struggle for equal rights cost you an election. Maybe if you had actually stood up, fought the good fight and proved your case you would have won. But you were to f'ing busy trying to move the party to the right to appeal to "moderates" and "undecideds" to actually do a good job building a true democrat platform. Pulling the party further and further to the right will not help anything. It's doing exactly what the neocons want - making the country more and more amenable to their B.S.
ON EDIT - Touchdown, this is a rant inspired by your post, but not at all directed at you, as we're in total agreement.

3. Not about family values, it's about bigotry |

The DEMS didn't make a big thing out of supporting gay marriage, they became the punching bags of the fundies because they are tolerant. That's all, not tolerant about anything in particular, just tolerant.

4. I believe I wrote a post about this |
|
Sorry, I can't seem to find any of my old posts. I can't use a search function and can't find a record of my older posts. I did write an email to friends following the Mass SJC's ruling on this topic, and claimed that Karl Rove was the happiest guy in America.
anyway gavin newsome did the RIGHT THING the WRONG WAY. I honestly think he was showboating for personal gain in his heavily liberal city following a very tough election where he was challenged on the left.
Gavin's disregard of the law sent shock waves through red america. Images from the events were on the front page for a long time.
I fully support gay marriage and have good gay friends, but I think that the way in which this was done has severely set back the gay rights movement for maybe a decade. Sad.

6. I could point to several posts in the Oregon forum concerning timing... |
|
...and placement of the anti-gay marriage ballot measures. None outright blaming gays for wanting to marry, nor should we, but I do think it's strange and unfortunate that the issue surfaced so suddenly, in this of all elections. It's difficult for me to think of it as a random coincidence. Someone or something incited a movement among gays to marry this year, in San Francisco and Massachussetts -- aka easy liberal target practice.
We have fought against homophobic agendas before in Oregon and won, but those were measures coming from the far rightwing directly attacking gays, e.g., the rights of gays to teach in schools. This issue was framed quite differently, as a defense of religion itself. As it stands, this is a winner for the republicans that crosses party lines. While our previous battles were often close, they easily swept this ammendment through in Oregon, with a 14% margin in a state that gave Kerry a 5-point spread.
FDR: "In politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way."

7. I've learned all I know about the issue in the past year |
|
I have to say, before then I was unaware that same-sex couples had made any inroads toward getting married, or wanted to.
