Jennifer Granholm '08 ? (yes, I know - you'd have to amend...) |
|
I understand people's fear or an Arnold Schwarzenegger campaign. However, I highly doubt that within 4 years the right-wing of the GOP will EVER nominate him. The guy is a social liberal. The Republicans are OWNED by the Christian Right.
For that reason, the proposed amendment doesn't bother me. As a 2nd-generation American, I know many friends in the immigrant community who would be barred from ever becoming president solely because they moved to this country when they were 3. Children adopted from China? Nope, they're not allowed.
Anyway, I think the amendment would help US far more then it would help them.
I truly think Jennifer Granholm, governor of Michigan, would be an ideal candidate in 2008. She comes from a powerful Midwestern swing state, she's charismatic, attractive, effective, liberal but not "scary" to non-liberals, woman, lacks Hillary's divisiveness.
Anybody else think Granholm in '08 would be really promising?

10. Well for one lifting the ban on dove hunting after 99 years. |
|
It isn't so much the lifting of the ban as her telling those of us that care she would never lift the ban. Well guess what, she did. She caved and lost me as a supporter. I have been behind her for her whole political career and was extremely disappointed in her for not sticking by what she promised. I don't like people that say one thing and do another. I guess Ted Nugent got to her.

2. The Republican power brokers would do what |
|
it takes to smooth things over with the fundies, and Arnold would destroy her. Of course, I don't think she'd even win the nomination in the first place, so this is kind of a waste. But Arnold would crush her in a general, and he would reach the general.

6. Arnold would have to move a little bit to the right, |
|
the top Republicans would use some scare tactics on the fundies (We need him to beat Hillary!!!!), California would go red and it would be game fucking over.

7. No, they would never trust him. The only reason Bush gets four more |

years is because of the fundys. They will not leave them now. That party is practically a theocracy now.

8. I think you overestimate the fundies. |
|
They are ruled by fear, fear of gays, fear of atheism, all that stuff. It's easy to manipulate such people. Hell, Arnold could just pick a fundy-friendly VP candidate, Bill Frist comes to mind, and imply that guy would be his Dick Cheney, his puppet master, and they'd be reassured.

3. Yes, I love her. People talking about Rudy or Arnold are crazy. The RW |

fundys would NEVER let that happen.
I say we ride this wave for our own purposes.

15. They're just as apt to re-elect W in '08! |

While they're busy amending the Constitution, they might decide its better to take out the term-limit and appoint Chimp for life.

12. This is not a time for picking candidates |
|
We need to regroup and not clutch at straws. No one person is going to save us. We need to build a patient foundation cemented in our core values. This will come in time.
We are only two days out from the most significant political loss for our side in over 100 years. Let us step back and regain our equilibrium. We feel desperate. We have been knocked back. It is too soon to know our best approach. Give us two or three weeks to grieve, maybe longer. Then we will be ready to fight.

looking for the ideal candidate in '08 is completely ignoring all the work that needs to be done to reinvigorate the Democratic Party.

Requirements: 30 years of American residency, 25 years of American citizenship, no dual citizenship for 20 years, no service in the government of any foreign country in any capacity.
That would fit the vast majority of people who moved here as children - people like Madeline Albright, Felix Frankfurter, Jennifer Granholm, etc.

The chance of something like that happening are miniscule.
Now, you're free to differ. But the chance of a foreign agent becoming president as a mole of a foreign government is preposterous. There's no reason that someone couldn't be a foreign stooge even if they are natural-born citizens.
