Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 09:40 PM by Nimble_Idea
YUP THEY SURE ARE
I bet they feel like we should give the pukes a mandate.
TO HELL WITH THAT.
NO JUDGE THAT SHRUB APPOINTS SHOULD EVER GET APPROVED. STOP ANY SUPREME COURT JUSTICE, NO SUPREME COURT IS BETTER THAN A PUKE COURT. That way no FUNDIE laws can be passed.
Seriously, We can't let ideas like this and The DLC let this happen.
THERE WAS NO MANDATE.

1. Ahh, a thread that has called me out |
|
and obviously the poster of the thread has not read a single word I've actually written on the subject.
Here are the facts. Rhenquist will be retiring very soon. This is a fact, Rhenquist is one of the most rightwing activist justices presently on the court. This is also an irrefutable fact.
When his replacement comes up, Bush will first nominate the most far right wing jurist possible in hopes of a filibuster. After that nomination is borked, he will nominate a moderate, the Democrats will confirm, and Bush gets precisely what he wants. Abortion will not end with this nomination and he still holds it as his "get out the base" card for 2006.
The "nasty baby murdering Democrats" are painted as obstructionists and the congressional midterms are now nationalized.
End of the day after the midterm elections of 2006, and the Dems are left with 39 seats in the Senate and will never mount another filibuster.
Now let's look at it under my strategy. When the nominee omes before the Senate committee, the Democratic committee members ask their questions nicely, get the answers on the record, and vote to move the thing forward. The Republicans will become a bit nervous because they are losing their bogeyman.
When it comes for an up or down vote, every Democrat "abstains in the interest of national unity". Right Wing activist judge is now confirmed, replacing a right wing activist judge. Net gain on the court for the Republicans = 0. But now the Republicans are in a tizzy, especially those like Chaffee and Snowe, who are up for re-election. They will have to come to the Democrats and ask for a filibuster when O'Connor steps down. The Democrats agree to it on a single condition, the moderate Republicans must initate the filibuster and the Democrats fall in line.
End of the day, the Republicans are the obstructionists and the Democrats have worked in the spirit of bipartisanship. During the midterms, it won;t be a national election and we can potentially pick up a couple of seats in the Senate.
Either way, we end up with a right wing judge. One way wins, the other loses.

4. This is a bad forum for this sort of thing, too |
|
Not enough space or time to accurately put my thoughts on this out there.
I'm doing better on the letters I'm crafting for the Senators, Congressmen, and Governors.

5. That's a dangerous strategy but intriguing |
|
The problem as I see it is that it may have worked with Reagan or Bush I. At home, late at night, when no one was looking, they were social liberals on a lot of issues.
The problem is, Bush, Cheney, Ashcroft and the gang may really fucking mean it. And Cheney is especially dangerous, because he is not running in 2008. And Bush is going to do his four years and spend the next thirty clearing brush in Texas.

6. This is a better explanation than the first time. |
|
I like it, especially the explanation of "no net loss".

We need to heal. Stop the name-calling.

7. The only way to stop all this... |
|
...is to come together and agree to hand ALL these issues over to the states. Abortion and gay marriage being the first two. Let the repukes in the red states have backalley abortions with coathangers. After all, THAT IS WHAT THEY VOTED FOR. We liberals will move to blue states and keep our policies to ourselves, just as they have been BEGGING us to do for years. Give them what they want, and see how they like it.
It's time for liberals to stop being concerned about the welfare of people who hate us with a passion. Every time we try to help them, they spit on us and tell us they don't want our interference. Let's wake up and quit trying to force the good society down their throats. If they want to be a third world nation, LET THEM. We will stay in our own blue states leave them to their own fate, which THEY ASKED FOR.
It's the only way. We won't win again in the forseeable future. Red America DOES NOT WANT what we have to give. Let's withdraw the offer.
