I just cannot believe what I am reading on this forum. Oops, is this the Free Republic forum, no its Du. So what is all this crap about dumping parts of the democratic platform to gain favor with the dark side. The democratic party is about caring about your fellow human being, the environment, and the future. It shouldn't be confined to the the US, to the rich, the straight or the Caucasian. When we start talking about dumping one group or the other as a liability to the democratic party, we become more like the republicans. We then lose more than an election, we lose ourselves.
Suck it up, we lost the election. Regroup. The repugs cannot sustain their lying, corrupt government forever. They will do as much to destroy themselves as we will if we stay focused and cohesive.
Bash away, I'm going to go watch Star Trek reruns and eat dinner.}(

3. Excellent Idea! g'nite, y'all! |

Sheesh, I've seen more politeness when I dumpster dive in the free yahoo boards than I've seen on some threads here today.
There's been freeper outings galore. Check for tombstones before you reply to any post, otherwise you'll waste good venom on dead vermin.

Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 10:28 PM by Eloriel
No, make that gaddamned, bigoted MISERABLE cowards, and I'm personally quite sick of it (them). My message to the assholes is: find another party.
Edited to add: And there just happens to be a party alreayd tailor-made for them.

6. I think people need to vent |
|
Get stuff of of their system. I posted some pretty stupid stuff about Kerry yesterday morning. I feel bad about doing that and I wish that I hadn't.
But, it takes other people longer to mentally regroup. We will continue to fight.

11. its not about venting |
|
its about winning back 1/2 the map we ceded to the Republicans.
Since we ceded it, we're ALL going to get fucked and right good.
The whole lot of us. We either TAKE IT BACK, or bunker down and cede even MORE of it next time.
Next time Wisconsin and Michigan wont be close. THEN WHAT?
The anti-abortionists were in the Republican party, but they sat down, shut up and bided their time. For 30 years they waited. Last tuesday was the pay-off.
Now, We cant fight them effectively. I'm getting accused of selling out people I'm trying my damnedest too look out for their best interests!

19. I'm not ready to throw in the towel |
|
But I must admit, I was pretty down on things Wednesday morning. I don't have a choice but to fight. It's not in my nature just to sit back and take what Bush and the GOP throw at me.
One of the amazing things that the democratic party does, and maybe it doesn't do it perfectly, is build a coalition of all of these diverse groups. We need EVERYONE. Gays contribute millions of votes, as do the pro-choice choice voters and environmentalists. We all have something in common that binds us together.
I wouldn't accuse you of selling out. I don't think that's what this is about. It's a rural attitude versus a modern outlook. I don't know exactly how to reach the rural and conservative voters, but I don't think it has anything to do with throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

7. I know your post is referring to the gay marriage issue..... |
|
I've never understood the obsession with gay marriage. I've been married, trust me, it's not all it's cracked up to be. If two gay people want their union sanctified in the eyes of god, then I'd have to say, I'd prefer civil unions, but then again I'm an atheist, but have studied the bible and it is very clear to me that the christian faith, as I understand it, does not sanction nor recognize such marriages. Why not push for civil unions? There are such remedies as wills, power of attorney, life insurance policies and quit claim deeds to make sure your significant other is protected and cared for. Don't even try to flame me on this opinion as I am probably the least homophobic person you will ever meet, I am just being pragmatic and the gay marriage issue has become a real wedge issue in this country.

100% equal for all, and civil unions for all. No more marriage certificate as the legal document in the eyes of the state. Relegate marriage to the domain of the church and only the church.

My partner and I would treasure something as basic as visitation rights for the hospital. My work offers DP benefits. But with the marriage amendment that just passed in GA, we may have to move to keep them in effect. That's not America. No matter how many rural and southern states are holding the country hostage.

I have post this before. The whole gay marriage issue should be a non-issue. The GOP argues against gay marriage based on the sanctity of marriage. Sorry, I too am an atheist, I do not hold anything sacred. These are religious terms. As I recall, the state should not be fashioning laws to establish a state religion.
I think marriage as a legal, secular term should be abandoned for every citizen. Civil unions for all. If you then want to bond in a religious union. You have the freedom to do so in what ever church your little religious heart desires. We all become equal in the eyes of the state and the religious can maintain their sacred tradition.

8. Some of it is sarcasm. Some of it is freepers. |
|
Some of it is legitimate, but most of it isn't.
My advice - ignore, ignore, ignore. People are working out a lot of frustration, anger, and confusion. Unfortunately, they've chosen targets that make little sense. They should be targeting that anger toward the media, the Republicans, etc.

I think the dem party including lots of people on DU are doing soul searching wondering what the hell we can do to win. And when all of the news is claiming the reason we lost is because of guns and gays, well then a lot of DU'ers respond by asking what can we do about it?

Some of us would really like to know what the game plan is for the G & L movement. I have asked a number of times and get no answer. I promise it is not a trick question.
If the Demo. Party understands what the plan is, then the party can evaluate what more it can do.
I think it unreasonable, however, to expect the party to blindly follow the movement. The Gay rights movement committed huge blunders this last spring that lead to an elevation of the issue that the Republicans could exploit. Unless you call gay mariage bans in 11 states progress.
BTW, asking questions is not homophobic.
