We are in such deep trouble
I don't think all Dems/liberals/progressives have fully grasped that yet. We had very, very right-wing, religious, conservative Senators who won election, the election (or whatever it was) of the most divisive and right-president that we've ever had, and this country is in real danger of slipping into a quasi-religious police state, where women's rights and concerns about the environment and assisting those most in need in our country are either severely restricted or crushed completely. I think the biggest question is, how much damage can they do it four years, and what do we do in that time to both limit the damage and prepare to take back what is rightfully ours? As I posted here previously, the current Democratic party leadership is woefully incompetent and clearly unable to lead us back to where we belong. I'm not sure what the answer is myself, but there must someone out there with a solution, someone who does have a plan to take back our country, or at least a good idea about where to start. I am willing to do just about anything it takes, work as hard as I have to, to accomplish our goal. I don't want my daughters and any granddaughters that may come along in the future to grow up in a country where they have fewer rights than I do now. Our country is regressing rather than progressing, and that scares me. We need to regroup, form grassroots organizations throughout the country, and have a plan for 2008. I think DU should be at the forefront of this and serve as a base from which people across the country can connect and network. I know it's late and I'm kind of rambling, but I'm guessing that at least some of this makes sense and I just think we should all start getting with our respective local Dem groups and start throwing ideas around. Go to http://www.meetup.com/ and look for your local Dem meetup. We can't just sit around and do nothing while those thugs ruin our country. It's ours too, and if anyone reading this still give two shits about it, then get off your duffs and defend it!

2. we are not in danger of slipping
we are IN a quasi-religious police state.

The fundies of all stripes in all countries are zealots with a delusional world view that is compatible only with the Dark Ages.

The neocons are empirists, bent on world domination and have now sucked us into a quagmire in teh Middle East. No other nation is stupid enough to join us in this folly. we will be fighting a losing battle in the Middle East indefinitely, until the oil runs out and the neocons and the religious right wack jobs no longer have a common interest in that part of the world.

3. I'm glad you bring up
the senate seats because this was one of the things that I almost knew would happen, but I didn't want to face it.

Someone said that it was like an across the board rejection of democrats in the south. We got some real wackos - DeMint, Coburn, Martinez, Vitter (God we couldn't even force that into a runoff) God...I'm just glad we didn't get Keyes and Coors.

4. well, let's work on a strategy for the midterm elections
Let's keep our eyes on the prize -- the prize being the opportunity to do unto Bush and his neocons precisely what got done to us back in '94.

Hint: as a necessary first step it involves canning the DLC, whose tactics have conclusively proven to be nonperformers.

5. I Wish You Luck
I've tried the past two days to sound similar messages that you have. This party needs to re-invent itself from the bottom up...doing what the Repugnicans have done for years...building strong state & local organizations all over that lead to the strong support they enjoy now.

Sadly there is a lot that has to be done and right now no one to lead. Lots of people with all sorts of reasons we lost and which special interest of theirs is in peril, but until your post I wasn't really hearing much about taking a real, honest look at things and coming up with a strategy that builds both a stronger party and puts it in a position to put the right wing in check.

No, I don't think people realize how bad this loss was and how little redress Democrats have. There's no House or Senate, more hostile courts and a Repugnican party with lots of hubris and a mandate that is going to make these next 2 years like living hell.

Now we can start reorganizing or continue to have pity parties. Someone please PM me when someone gets a clue around here...LOL.

This is good
Everyone who isn't moving to Canada or the Netherlands or wherever, (she said facetiously) needs to keep hammering this message until it gets through. I too am fighting the desire to throw up hands and say "No mas", but we have to pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps and do something, or the American we all used to know and love will be down the toilet. Again, I urge everyone to begin networking with your local Democratic groups and try to form a game plan, something we can then share with other communities, and eventually with national. I think the first thing we should share with the DNC is that they need to 86 Macauliffe. He is useless. And anyone else at that level who is also not serving the party as they should needs to follow him out the door. I don't know how a party chair gets his/her job, but if us regular Joes and Janes have anything to say about it, we should pick someone who is willing to go to the mat with their language and their deeds in promoting the party agenda. I say we start taking names and kicking ass. That's what the other side does, and they are in charge. We should take a lesson.
