Bush-voting Christian from Texas reaches out to blue state America

In yesterday's NY Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/04/opinion/l04elect.html

To the Editor:

I write to say something I feel deeply. I am a woman from Texas and a devout Christian. I am someone who prayed after 9/11 and sent money to help.

I voted for George W. Bush. I will do all in my power to respect the Democratic positions and reach out for unity as a country, as a neighbor. I want the United States to be united! Let's reach out to one another as Americans, regardless of party affiliation.

Lissa Morris
San Antonio, Nov. 3, 2004

All I can say, Ms. Morris, is, tough shit.

100. Hey don't pick on Neanderthals
My 6th grader is studying evolution in school - here in CA we still believe in science - and learned that Neanderthal fossils show evidence that the Neanderthals cared for the weak and infirm among them. Repukes are descended from the australopithecines - the name appropriately means "Southern Ape" - who had heads the size of baseballs and are much earlier on the evolutionary ladder.

Sadly, this isn't going to be a walk in the park, and she will likely have a very hard time adjusting to living out of her car and selling apples on the street corner.

I don't care if they're from a red state or a blue state. I refuse to just play nice after being vilified, called a traitor, called a liberal faggot, called commie liberal scum, and so on...

Furthermore, I strongly suggest people stop the red dem bashing in this forum. Just because I made a stupid comment out of anger hours and hours ago, du'ers are tearing themselves apart according to arbitrary divisions. every time I see it I feel like crap. Don't blame the red dems, that was my mistake, give them our support, they need us.

9. Start first by reaching out to your fellow red-state conservatives
You know, the ones who are obnoxious and have been rubbing the election in the noses of their blue state friends and relatives. Surely you know some.

Tell THEM to knock it off and that it isn't helping unity.
Clean your own house first, then worry about reaching out to blue America. You're more likely to be taken seriously that way.

and give the wounded their arms and legs back, then I will unite with her. However she can't do that and she voted to validate the poorly planned, illegal Iraq war, so too late.

Plus, it's nice she sent money to help the 9-11 victims, but then she voted for the guy who disgustingly exploited the victims of the tragedy for his own political benefit and went to Iraq and diverted the military from getting bin laden.

13. More than willing to, Ms. Morris
But unfortunately, it's awfully difficult when the man you support for president is so clearly unchristian in his actions. Jesus didn't say "shock and awe" your enemies, he said to love them. Now, while we can probably have a very good discussion about the best ways to go about that, I think that we have reached an insuperable disagreement if you truly believe that by loving one's enemies, Jesus was actually saying that you should bomb them from miles up in the air, killing them indiscriminately when they can neither fight back nor get away. And we will have particular difficulty finding common ground if you feel this is a good program to carry out on people who have never harmed us, and never meant our country any harm in the first place.

Let's talk.

17. I am willing to take her at her word
Unfortunately, she doesn't offer any indication of anything concrete that she will do other than to offer conciliatory words, while supporting a ruthless corrupt politician.

To truly back up her words, she needs to be willing to stand up and hold her guy accountable, to call him out on his lies, to voice her objection to him when he acts divisively, which is pretty much all the time.

Unlike us, she actually holds some small degree of power over Bush if she chooses to use it.

I hope she, and others like her, do. But I will not hold my breath.

Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 02:30 PM by hatrack
Fuck your smeary, feary ever-teary "Christian compassion", your homophobic political leaders and your condescending outreach.

Fuck your jockstrap-sniffing worship of a phony cowboy who's not fit to shine John Kerry's shoes.

Fuck your support of an endless war in which thousands of Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis, both guerillas and civilians, will die in the years to come, a war based on lies and waged on the premise that sufficient bombing and strafing will somehow create democracy.

Fuck your support of an administration which now has the power to make people disappear, without recourse to the law, without knowledge of why they are arrested and without even the possibility of contacting their families.

Fuck the Republican party which you support, a party as eager as it's ever been always to smear, lie, distort twist and defame, just as long as it can win.

Fuck Tom DeLay, a Texan like yourself, who on Wednesday publicly called for the conversion of America to a theocratic state.

Fuck Tom Coburn, a Republican like yourself, who believes that doctors performing abortions should be executed, though he himself has performed them.

Fuck your support of an administration that favors increased mercury in the fish we eat, increased soot and carcinogens in the air we breathe and increased sewage and toxins in the water we drink.

Fuck your town, fuck your neighbors, and fuck your family. Fuck your workplace, your boss, your friends, your colleagues, your doctor, your dentist, your pastor and your pets.

Fuck the car in your driveway, the telephone on your wall, the garbage disposal in your sink and the sump pump in your basement. Fuck the grass in your front yard, the trees in your backyard and the shingles on your roof.

But please don't take my remarks out of context, Lissa. I apologize if they offended anyone.

38. It was in yesterday's SL Post-Dispatch
The editorial was entitled "What Kind Of Mandate".

I don't have the link, but here's the quote.

EDIT

"For the good of the nation, Mr. Bush should extend his hand across the electoral chasm. He made a good start Wednesday when he told supprters of Sen. John F. Kerry, D-Mass., that he wanted to earn their trust.

But House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Tex., has other plans. 'We're going to be able to lead this country in the direction we've been dreaming of for years,' Mr. DeLay said Wednesday. ' . . . We're going to put God back into the public square.'"

EDIT

Knowing what we know of DeLay, "putting God back into the public square" does not mean religious freedom. It means state-sponsored Christian fundamentalism, enforced by federal fiat.

And knowing what we do regarding Christian Reconstruction, with which DeLay has been linked for years, it doesn't take too much specialized training to read between the lines here.

I'll find the URL when I have a moment.

24. I got a voicemail from a friend like this
We go to church together.

She has more seriously ill people in her extended family than you could count. Those with insurance can barely afford the co-pays on the perscriptions that keep their kids alive. Some of the healthy ones can't afford insurance for themselves and are just hoping they don't get sick, and haven't been able to afford a dental exam in years, and so on.

Yeah and she voted for *, and called me yesterday to leave a genuine consoling message, knowing that I must feel bad my candidate lost. She just DOES NOT GET IT.

When we start talking about the corruption, greed, lying, and murder that the people they elect engage in, a big filter goes up, because they don't want to get sucked into anything "negative."

How to get through???

Her parents are Nazis; her father works for the State Department in some capacity. She said her father and his cronies actually called her from their office yesterday to offer "condolences," but were really laughing and needling her. She was very upset at her father. Her parents then turned around and sent her a Panera gift card, and she bought bagels for the entire clinic. She was very bummed out today at her father's behavior.

120. I can't remember needling a SINGLE Republican ...

Ya know, I remember in 1992 I was at Purdue and hung a Clinton sign in my dorm room window (If I could vote in 88 I would have voted for Bush. College changed my attitudes on things). Well BEFORE the election I was harassed by Republicans waving Bush signs!!!

After the election, I didn't hound ANY of them. After Clinton won in 96' I didn't go after colleagues and brag about Clinton's win. I was content that things were going my way!!!

I don't understand when people need to gloat. I don't understand why they aren't confident and happy with their victory.

The fact that Republicans want to make sure everyone knows "they're in charge" and "they're right" tells you something about their personalities. And as I look back to my earlier days when I felt Republicans were right, I behaved the same way as well!!

112. Ask her who Jesus would smear.
Tell her what Bush did to McCain in the South Carolina primaries.

Ask her if she admires Lee Atwater and Richard Nixon. Ask her if it's "Christian" for Bush to allow policy and campaigns to be formulated by a man who is a disciple of Tricky Dick and the libidinous Lee Atwater.

Ask her if she would rather ensure Paris Hilton pays no taxes on her inheritance or get affordable medical insurance for her family.

Ask her what Jesus said about the sheep and the goats and how they would be divided (Gospel of Matthew, chapter 28, I think), and why.

I'm becoming convinced that people just do not read their Bibles but instead respond to what's familiar and what authority figures tell them to do. They don't seem to question doing things the same old way.

God HELP this country! It's sickeningly dysfunctional.

If Jesus was on earth today I do believe he would rip the Enron sign out of the ground and smash it through Halliburton's headquarters. Jesus would raze every building on K-street to the ground!!!!

The ONLY aggressive action in the gospels is Jesus' handling of the money-changers who were corrupting the temple!!!

Democracy and fair commerce is our modern temple. And I think Jesus would have a mind to turn over Bush's tables!!!!

They elected him, he's their president, this is their mess, and I'm not lifting a finger to help unless they start offering me some deals.

When the fundies come crawling to me for help because they realise that they've been had, I'll probably help them because I'm generally a kind and decent person. I'll make sure I get some socialist-democratic commitments in return.

But help them cram their hate-filled agenda down the throats of this country and expect me to smile? Forget it.

Plus, anytime they talk about how "just" the Iraq war is, ask them when they enlisted. Than taunt them for lacking the courage of their conviction!!!!

To Lissa,

please read Matthiew6:5

and stop wearing your religion on your sleeve, calling yourself a devout christian in public does not make you any better than the rest of us.

Unfortunately, I truly believe your are being deceived by the forces of evil who use your faith against you for their own worldly gain.

I would urge you to look deep into your soul, and stop mixing up faith with politics.

following orders. If you follow a flawed ideology, you face the consequences. If your job gets outsourced, your civic infrastructurre gets destroyed, your savings get stolen by corporate thieves, or if you get hit in retaliation by a survivor of one of the hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians killed in the middle east, please remember to live/die happily in the knowledge that Bush and his cronies are richer.

105. Maybe this will explain my post.
Supposedly healing "I love you" chain emails being sent to Democrats by the crazy fundamentalists. The LTTE is an example of the "reaching out" that is starting to circulate via chain email to get us on board with Bushco. Here's a prior post:

They are being led by seemingly harmless email chains.

They slowly become part of "the chain" - they thrive on misinformation and idealizing GWB. They began with 'God's love' and "I love you" - all warm & fuzzy, seemingly innocent. Gradually the emails progressed into idealizing Bush and demonizing Democrats. You wouldn't believe the lies I read about Kerry through these chains.

The same chains circulate around my office. At first I laughed over them & I asked to be dropped from the chains. Now I see that they slowly and surely poisoned the minds of some good people. THEY ARE NOW BRAINWASHED BLIND SHEEP. In a matter of months 2 of my sisters have become completely warped. How do we break this cycle??????

109. A few basic questions for her?

Will she continue to promote an unjust war based on lies?

Will she continue to support an administration that places corporate profits ahead of the people?

Will she attempt to eradicate much of the government used for social justice?

Will she oppose a modest increase in CAFE standards?

Will she promote the exploitation of American nature reserves?

Will she promote the idea that tax cuts for millionaires is a just economic policy?

Will she oppose any encroachment of religion into our government?

If she wants to reach out, where will she compromise? Is this a bullshit ploy simply to make us Democrats acquiesce to every cryptic right-wing policy they can toss at us?

Bullshit. We will not support policies based on hatred, fear, greed, vengeance, intolerance, and religious dogma.

But I'd like to sit her down and tell her what I see and hear virtually every day in Washington, D.C., and how the GOP, led by Bush, has bent over backwards to be as cold and vindictive and divisive as possible.

I heard Bush's stump speech MANY times. The crowds always reacted with derision at the mention of Kerry and Edwards, and Bush did nothing to discourage it. The same man (?) who kept strict rules about congressmen wearing a coat and tie in the White House (and bullied Dick Gephardt one time when he broke the rule) did JACK SHIT about civility and comity and bipartisanship.

She's voted for someone who worships Mammon and lies and gets innocent children killed for his little vanity war. I'd like to sit her down and tell her what I know and see if she can take it.

114. Dear Miss Morris ...

Dear Miss Morris,

You should have prayed that god send you a more competent individual to occupy the oval office.

GW Bush presided over a systematic effort to dismantle anti-terrorism efforts in favor of prosecuting crimes like prostitution and pornography. While increased prosecution of these crimes may fit with your christian values, you really need to wonder if you needed to be protected more from smut or mass murderers.

The president is incompetent and unfit to lead this nation. There is no sense to a unity that takes us over a precipice. Bush is leading us over a waterfall. I for one will paddle as hard as I can in the other direction.

America has deep divisions on their attitudes concerning what path the nation should go. This is NOT a problem. The problem is the METHOD that a group pursues it's objective. If you wanted a more civil discourse, you voted for the wrong man.

116. Ms. Morris:
I am a red stater, like you. But I am a Democrat and I voted for John Kerry.

You just voted for a war that has killed an estimated 100,000 Iraqis. You voted for a war in which over 1000 of our US servicemembers have died and thousands more have been wounded.

The war was waged against a country that did nothing to us and posed no threat to us.

Look down at your hands. They have blood on them.

Reaching out to hold your hand will bloody my own.

While I appreciate your effort, it is what my grandfather would have called "a day late and a dollar short."

117. Uniting means COMPROMISE!!!!

You know, give me a little of this, I'll give you some of that.

The Republicans don't seem to be in a compromising mood!!! In fact they're brow-beating Arlen Specter as we speak for suggesting that Bush appoint serious judicial scholars to the bench instead of young right wing syncphants like Clarence Thomas!!!!

Are ONLY shot in the next two years is for the traditional conservatives to bolt their own party and side with Democrats on more moderate legislation. The right-winger and neo-cons are fruit loops and they won't back down for ANYTHING!!!!

119. Uniting means "shut the hell up"
calls for unity from the right are only "shut the fuck up" in nicer language.

And this Democrat is having nothing of it.

It seems you are as devout to your naivete as your religion.

Anyone noted the redundancy in the letter? Bush voter. Texas. Christian. One in the same it seems :)
