It's not "moral values" or homophobia.
If I understand the term correctly, it's the echo chamber.
A couple of days ago I posted a few paragraphs from "Too Little, Too Late" by Robert Parry at consortiumnews:

George W. Bush’s electoral victory is chilling proof that the conservatives have achieved dominance over the flow of information to the American people and that even a well-run Democratic campaign stands virtually no chance for national success without major changes in how the news media operates.

It is not an exaggeration to say today that the most powerful nation on earth is in the grip of an ideological administration – backed by a vast network of right-wing think tanks, media outlets and attack groups – that can neutralize any political enemy with smears, such as the Swift boat ads against John Kerry’s war record, or convince large numbers of people that clearly false notions are true, like Saddam Hussein’s link to the Sept. 11 attacks.

Given the right (pun intended) propaganda machine, you could turn the word "motherhood" into a hated thing.
Witness what has been done to the term "liberal". I can remember when just about everyone understood it to mean a person who was open to change and new ideas. The folks who dragged America, kicking and screaming, out of it's own apartheid were liberals and proud of it. Conservatives, on the other hand, were thought of as stuffy, pompous, and generally sticks-in-the-mud. Against progress.

Now, even liberals are ashamed to use the term to describe themselves. The propaganda machine of the Scaiffes, Ailles, Safires, Limbaughs, et al, has been successful beyond their wildest dreams.

I would submit that with the same kind of national loudspeaker, we could make the word "homosexual" totally neutral. Hell, we could make it something to aspire to. It's the getting of our own bullhorn that's the hard one.

It's not who do we include and who do we shun. It's the perception folks. It's always the perception.
Read the article and then get back to me.

Dedicated to PlaidAdder, NSMA, Arwalden, and all the rest I'm too lazy to go look up.

2. It's gonna take decades
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 04:06 PM by Selatius
It took decades for the Republicans to establish the network of institutes, foundations, think tanks, et al. to flood not only academia but also the news outlets with spokesmen who create a false consensus that is to the right than actually is. The Democrats were asleep the whole time, and if we start now, it's probably going to take decades for us as well. The only difference is that liberals aren't backed by corporatists because they hate a graduated income tax and being held accountable. We need people power as a substitute instead.

4. And by extension, the amount of Americans not voting.
ICAM with your post--the perception created by the mass media is very damaging.

I think it contributes to the nonvoting in this country.
Look at the number one films, albums, television shows, etc. The majority of this country IS NOT conservative.

But the conservatives sure as hell get out to vote though.
