1. We need to be concentrating on rebuilding our party
And rebuilding and revitalizing and updating our ideology.

And we need to focus on the 2006 results to lay the groundwork for a national network of democratic volunteers that know their areas and the people who they can count on the GOTV and our message.

Nous parlons du parti Démocratique ici aux les Etats-Unis. Cependant, vous pouvez vouloir considérer l'accumulation le NDP là-bas au cas où les états bleus font sécession dans l'avenir proche.

11. This is about 1 year early
But speculation never hurt.

I voted 'I am not sure'. Definitely not Hillary Clinton. Other than that, I am wide open.

Al Gore has been my political inspiration for ages (pre-1992), so I am inclined in his direction for sentimental reasons, if nothing else. Obviously, I do not know if he would be a wise choice for 2008 at this time.

12. And what about John Kerry ? Just a question
The French are always very surprised to see that in the US a candidate that have been defeated can't present himself a second time with reasonable chances to be chosen. In France it's the contrary ! The man is well known, he proves his perseverance and tenacity by trying again. Chirac has been defeated three times before he has been elected (twice) for exemple.

21. Well, Nixon did it
But it is a silly fixation in American politics. I think it's because it would just be awkard. Campaigns tear the candidate down to his (or her) core. It's like the whole country has seen them naked. So, should they decide to run again, people shy their eyes away. You're just a little embarassed for the guy...

Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 06:51 PM by The Nation
Former two-term governor of Indiana, and just won an easy re-election to the senate for his second-term in a heavily republican, solid red state. He is a moderate, and is known for being able to gather support from democrats as well as republicans.

24. My thoughts exactly.
He's a moderate, but not the spineless kind- he's a moderate by principal, not by pansiness. He's a looker, too, and youthful (I've checked, he'll be 53 in 2008). God bless him, he voted against Gale Norton as Secretary of the Interior. He's a good guy, with executive experience and bipartisan appeal. His pop was Governor and a civil rights worker.
I like him.

Four years is an eternity in politics. Before we start picking a candidate (and getting into the ridiculous my-candidate-is-better-than-your-candidate snits that plagued DU throughout the primaries) we have to regroup and figure out where the Democratic Party is going, what its message is, and how it is going to position itself. And, for that matter, whether there should even be a Democratic Party. Maybe it should just go away and let us put together something less corporate and unresponsive to grassroots efforts. In any event, though some people will certainly start positioning themselves for a run in '08 almost immediately, it is nearly impossible to choose a candidate until we can see the lay of the land, so to speak. Let's look at the BBV problem, put a viable organization together, and then start looking at (and fighting over) the next batch of candidates.

4 years in the Senate simply will not be enough by 2008 when we are still fighting the war on terra. He's AWESOME, don't get me wrong, but 4 years in the senate isn't enough. However Feingold's 16 years will be plenty by 2008. (I think that's the correct number)

41. General Wes Clark...we should have gotten it right the first time.
Many here criticized we Clarkies for our zeal in supporting the General. Ultimately, it boils down that the Clark supporters got it right the first time regarding what this election was going to be about. Bush bested Kerry on the 'who makes you feel safe' issue 61% to 34%.

...OBL comes out with a video just days before the election playing boogie man...

...the war in Iraq is a disaster...

...Iran voted to reignite their enriched uranium program...

...swiftboat veterans, swiftboat veterans, swiftboat veterans...

A GENERAL would have relieved these issues. A General from Arkansas would have captivated much of middle America. A General would have made those the Bush people wanted to scare feel more comfortable about Clark than they did Bush.

You can question the ability of someone who served in Vietnam as a Lt., but it would be entirely NOT believable to assert that a 4-star General a) didn't earn it, b) isn't capable of making a difference, and c) can't be trusted to protect the American people.

Edwards was a disaster as VP. He couldn't speak publically without the GOP using the "inexperienced Senator, oh, and he is a 'Trial Lawyer'" meme. He only won 27% of his OWN hometown, and helped not at all in the south and heartland, or even the midwest. He is, perhaps, one of the biggest mistakes Kerry made.

I liked Kerry, and I sure worked my ass off for the dems to win, but we better get it friggin' right the next time or the rest of our immediate future will be spent in a church operated state making war on others.

46. But...
...regardless of what you feel you 'owe' him, he would be a definite loser in 2008. We don't need another person the GOP can label a "New England Liberal"...in addition, with all due respect to brother Howard, he gave the GOP enough ammo on film to fire at will.

In 2008, it will be about WINNING against the beast that has attacked our lifestyles and our country (Bush and the Christian fundamentalists), and that's all. Everything else will have to follow.

We have 2 years to regroup before the next election. If you want to spin your wheels on ridicules 4 year fantasies that's your biz. I think many of you have to pull your head out of your ass and understand it's going to take the slow everyday talking and explaining of shrub's lies, voter fraud, who Rove is, how they used wedge issues to pit 1 American against another etc. No more fantasy island here folks. Wake up now because if this next election goes like the last two, we wont have a party left!

Democratic representation numbers today mirror what they were in 1928.

It will probably be someone I've never heard of.

But I'll know that they are anti-corporate, anti-war, pro-environment, pro-civil rights, and the rest of the Green Party platform.

I'll also know that they are not beholden to the corrupt leadership of either of the two entrenched major parties.

That's good enough for me.

75. Clark...for these reasons
He's an outsider.
He's Catholic.
He's was raised Southern Baptist.
He has Jewish heritage.
He has a Hispanic daughter-in-law and grandson.
He speaks 3 or 4 languages.
He talked about religion and values.
He is from the South!!!!
He could get AK, OK, NM, NV and many other Southern states.
He has more campaign and political experience than he had earlier.
He is known by the public now.
He has military experience galore and would be well respected.
He had executive experience in the military.
He has gravitas, good looks, charisma and yes...sex appeal.
He is really intelligent. (However that may to a negative to some.)
I'm sure there are many more that escape me just now.
He seems to be a perfect candidate!
