Tell me why do some people have a problem with Mark Warner?
Granted I admit it, I dont agree with my governor on everything but I like and respect him. He really has made Virginia Democrats proud to be democrats, and we had a lot of people running against republican incumbents this year. He's a great guy, he nearly beat a very republican incumbent in 1996. He brought democrats back to Richmond after a 8 year republican ruling frenzy. He's not incredibly liberal but he would make a fine president.

1. Is there a thread with the "problems" you talk about?
What is this related to?

2. look in all the threads you see about him
no thread specifically but people are ignorant about the guy, they dont know jack about him so they make an overgeneralization because many southern governors have been more moderate, and indeed Warner is but he'd make a fine candidiate and I think many people dont understand.

3. He looks great on paper.
The next thing I'm looking for are the biographical details and the anecdotes that show he feels the same way about society, America, the tax code, middle class opportunity, etc., that I feel, and that he has the skills to convey those feelings to the public effectively.

7. I think he does AP
He's a self made guy, like your personal favorite, John Edwards, Mark was the first one in his family to go to college, I believe he started a cell phone business and thats how he made his money. On middle class oppertunity, I believe he's good too, he really wants us and by us I mean Virginian schoolchildren to get a nice education.

15. In Edwards's book, he writes about having to move so many times when...

...he was little because his father kept chasing slightly better low-paying jobs and catching his mother look one more time out the back window of the car getting one last look at a house she knew she'd never return to.

It's little stories like those which give you huge insight into a person's personality, character and motivations.

You know, it's kind of like the stories about Bush shoving lit firecrackers up frogs' asses.

The stories just tell you so much.

I'll keep an eye out for stories like that about Warner.

4. Probably because I was thinking of JOHN Warner
Someone mentioned a Lieberman/Mark Warner ticket on a thread earlier today. (I couldn't imagine why Lieberman would choose a repuke as a running mate but confused the names!)

In all honesty I don't know who Mark Warner is, but I still maintain that I don't want to see Lieberman on an 08 ticket. He's too right leaning for my tastes.

Edited on Sat Nov-06-04 12:41 AM by JohnKleeb
He's not related to John at all btw, he's from Indy but went to school but has lived here since graduating from GWU. HE's a smatt, self made man. I dont think we'll see Lieberman btw. Oh and BTW Mark actually ran against John Warner, and did quite well.

6. My problem with Mark Warner is the fact that Mike Ealey would
win us more states in the South and potentially have longer coattails in the South.

We don't gain as much with Warner, although he would be a fine candidate too.

8. Easley would be fine too but I prefer Mark because I am Virginian
See Walt, your concerns I see but there are some people who I think don't know much about the man and immediately think he's some moderate who will sell us out, even though he was staunchly pro choice in a republican state, hes no liberal but hes on our side.

11. I am doing good but furious at what I see as fair weatherism of many
We still could build VA to make it democratic, Fairfax County went democratic for the first time since 1964, so Mark was right about bringing us out of part of the desert. I got his speech at the DNC on MP3 if anyone wants it, you have to IM me for it though so I can transfer it.

13. Yes--that is depressing
I'm shocked at how some want to give up dearly held principles of ours in an attempt to win. We're not going to win by out-bigoting the GOP; we have to find issues that resonate deeper with those "moral" voters, so they can say "I disagree with the Democrats on gay marriage, but X is so important to me they get my vote."

14. Yeah
I am thinking social justice like helping the poor and stuff would be good, because Ive read despite being the most poor state in the union, the state of Mississiphi has one of the if not hte highest donation rate to charity. I am also upset about people trashing the party, its jsut such fair weatheredness IMO, they would be a ok mostly if Kerry had won, sigh people dont get it, they never will. I am also disgusted with people ranting and raving against christianity, Ive actually decided to start attending Catholic services and I am also angry at the condescending nature to southerners.

26. I'll do what I can
I just went in to Mrs. Edwards' thread and thanked her and the Edwards supporters. I really hate to see both John's get a bad break, I am sure you'll like Warner, he and I dont agree on everything but he I think has a populist streak that could help us big in rural areas.

28. I will do,
The problem with many DUers is I think some of us are ignorant of some of the real problems going on, while I admit I am all for decriminalizing drugs, I put helping the people in those areas with high drug use like through better education and libraries first. Ive always been slightly more economically liberal than I have socially.

10. Warner/Easley
Mark Warner/MIke Easley. We win 2-3 Southern states, we win the election. It's THAT SIMPLE. Really, it is THAT SIMPLE.

Nothing more to it than that. This ain't rocket science, guys.

12. Tell me about Easley, I know hes popular in NC
I just dont get why many dont like Warner, he's been such a breath of fresh air to us here in Virginia, now if youre in a blue state and used to liberalism in all forms, of course you wont see what hes accomplished or understand why I like him. He's helping improve the Virginia ecocomy, I believe we're actually in a surplus now, he has really shown a democrat can do good in Virginia as well.

17. Virginia is the long-term model for Democrats in the South:
You're right about Fairfax County. Prince William County will follow in four or eight years. Virginia will be the first southern state to leave the solid south of the Republican Party. The growth in northern Virginia has brought in lots of more moderate voters. It's an interesting state. Warner is a great Governor, and would be a fine candidate.

There is a problem with the one-term limit in Virginia. I'm not sure that he'd have the experience needed to run for President. There are too many variables to think about who we should nominate next time. But off the top of my head the four strongest people are: Kerry, Warner, Edwards and Bayh.

Also, as foriegn policy becomes more important to the electorate--and I think there is no reason to think it will be less important in 2008 than it was this year--the Senate will become the training ground of presidents.
