After all Kerry won most of the midwest anyway, he only lost 3 states (Indiana, Iowa and Ohio) and two of those very narrowly. The South is a lost cause.

3. Midwest covers some more red states than you mention |

North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri (although I could imagine some might claim Missouri is Southern)

I tend to think of those western states as more "Great Plains" and more in with the Rocky Mountain region than here, but I'll give you Missouri. Regardless, Kerry still won about half the Midwest at least regardless of definition. He didn't get crap in the the south.
