Somethin's happenin' here - what it is ain't exactly clear
Susan Sarandon says "something big is coming" on Bill Maher last night.

Elizabeth Edwards' post here cautions "a little patience."

Our Democratic leaders are strangely quiet.

Something is up. Gathering evidence for a legal challenge under the 14th Amendment and Voting Rights Act?

1. I would be thrilled if this were the case.
However, I'm not holding my breath.

I caught a snippet of Pelosi the other day, and I was less convinced that this is the case.

2. To me, EE's post suggested
something along the lines of "my husband will run in 2008."

That may not be true, but that's what I got from it. Not that am I at all opposed to that idea. JE was a bad choice for VP. He is a communicator, not an attack dog. He talks about lifting people up, not tearing them down...well, that's not an attack dog's rhetoric. As a prez candidate he could be very good. We'll have to see.

From Elizabeth Edwards

Since I cannot start a thread (which I think is a good rule by the way), I have to hijack one -- at least briefly. I do want this thread to continue on, though, because the topic is so important. (Moderators can feel free to move this, of course.)

But I also had something I wanted to say to all of you. You know that I read DU and have for quite some time, long before any of you knew my name. I really appreciate the support you have given me on this latest hurdle and before. It means a lot to me and to John.

Now that I have more time, I will post some, too. But today I want to share something inspiring, part of a letter from Thomas Jefferson. This is from the new Bernstein biography of Jefferson. Jefferson sent the letter in 1798 after the passage of the Sedition Act:

"A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt. If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake."

7. Caught that, but it could also mean
they are all on their way to the Bahamas for Pina Coladas. Atrios also closed his blog yesterday saying he needed a few days off. Could be working on BBV or sipping a Mai Tai in Miami.

6. You know, ever since Gore conceded
at every turn where Dems have let us down -- and there've been too many instances to count -- I've seen posts on DU from hopeful but clueless people saying, "Wait, Dems surely must have a plan. They're laying low but working behind the scenes. You'll see. They're hatching something important...yadayada sisboombah."

Nothing of the sort EVER materialized. The painful truth is that our Dem leaders do NOT have a plan. Most of them don't even have a clue. If you want saving, you'll have to work at it yourself, along with all the rest of us. We have to be (or become) the leaders we've been waiting for. We can't afford to wait -- and hope -- on them any longer. In fact, history will probably show that we waited -- and hoped -- on them far too long as it is.

10. It's more hope than anything else
If the early statements are any indication, we'll have to do this ourselves because our leaders are pathetic. Pelosi working with *, Clinton saying it's not that bad, etc.

11. Democrats are operating under the idea that the elections were
won by the person at the WH, but this is not the case. They are totally unprepared in having a Plan B. There's a saying that you can't do the samething twice and expect a different result (not exact, but close). I have told people until I was blue in the face that it did not matter who our nominee was because election fraud ruled. People just didn't react at all to that! Very strange!

13. Another "Secret Democratic Plan" like the one in the 2002 elections?
Or is this the big "backlash against the Swift Boat Liars" that will hurt Bush? :)

24. We don't need "heroes". We just need ourselves
No Great White Candidate is going to ride in on his horse to save the party from its loss. Those days are long gone.

Look, it doesn't matter who the candidate is. If we, as a party, don't have a message that is a TRUE ALTERNATIVE to the Republicans, then we will not only lose-- but we deserve to lose.

You don't 'win' by promising to run Dubya's war "better" than he did. You don't win by promising "a stronger America" and pissing off the rest of the world, because you want to look "tougher". You don't win by saying one thing, and doing something else-- and not providing good justification for why you changed your mind.

This party could be led by Jeebus hisself, and if we didn't have a REAL message (not one derived from the Repukes), we'd STILL lose.

Real change starts from the ground up. No magic leader will appear and win it for us. We need to do it at the lower levels: win city council and school board seats, put our people in state legislatures, get them into Congress. Then, the presidency is a breeze.
