Yes, we lost this election. And a large majority of people in 11 states think I should be a third class citizen with no rights. Plus a substantial minority of people evidently hate us more than they love themselves. But I am not leaving this country.
I can't help but think of my uncle and the men of his generation who grew up with literally no hope or rolemodels of gay people. Born in 1934 he was 35 when Stonewall occured, and died at 37 in 1971. The simple fact is that we are immensely better off than he was back then. Even with the awful, divisive, and yes, evil campaign, we still have eliminated the sodomy laws in all 50 states, in several states, including the two largest, we have employment non discrimination laws. The simple fact is that the bigots are dying, and not being replaced.
LGBT have lived for generations without legal protection, nor political power and can do so again. I joked with friends and family about moving to Canada if Bush won, but Hell no. I may not live to see the day that I have full rights everywhere in this country, but I will be here to see Bush go. I will be here to see his replacement, who, if I have anything to do with it, will be a Democrat who recognizes the real Christian vision of this country. One where morality is defined by how we treat the poor and the orphans not who we sleep with. One where the failed doctrine of pre-emptive war is put on the ash bin of history. One where the Glady's Kravitz of this world don't get to but into the lives of their neighbors.
I am not leaving this country. It is mine as well as the Pharisees who have corrupted our churches. I don't blame those who choose to leave, but my ideals came before the Pharisees took hold. Jefferson is rolling in his grave but he saw worse and he stayed. While I am no Jefferson, I am not leaving either.
I may be immoral, but I am not a quitter. See you in 2008, Pharisees. I will be voting and bringing friends, you can't count on it.
