"Let's dispose of one fantasy right away:

No believable gestures of national healing and reconciliation will be issuing from the Bush White House. All such nonsensical talk should stop right now. The smirk on the president's face -- that muscular giveaway that only one half of the nation and the rest of the world seem able to detect -- says it all. The Bush culture war on tolerance, compassion, open-mindedness and similar real-American values is about to be prosecuted with the same brutal efficiency as the invasion of Iraq. And it will leave the same mess in its wake."
