At work almost all are rethugs and they didn't gloat to much. But if I bring up the election they assalt me with all the RW sh@t. Stuff like.

GWB won the most votes in history. 60+ million and counting.

GWB became the first president in 60 years to win re-election while his party was in control of BOTH the House and the Senate.

GWB became the first president in 68 years to win re-election and actually GAIN seats in both the House and the Senate.

And I don't know how to respond except be sad and hurt. I am leaning to just shutting my mouth for now and hoping they will understand and be shhh too.

Is this the right way to do this? Thanks to all who answer me on this. I am off to bed cause I was out drinking but I knew all the smart people here on DU could give me good advise.

Why let them stop there? Revel in his accomplishments with them. :)

He turned the largest surplus in US history into the largest deficit in US history in just a little over 3 years!! That's hard work!

He presided over the largest national security failure in US history even with warnings months in advance! Wow!

He's taken a LOT of vacation time (does any know the stats? Don't have them handy). That much vacation is hard work.

He's given fewer press conferences than Clinton, Bush or Reagan (I'll look for the specific numbers in a sec). It takes a lot of hard work to avoid talking to the American public, especially in this time of war and public unease.

If bringing up the election only results in them throwing this stuff at you over and over again, it's probably best not to get into the issue of politics for a while. There's no need in making your going to work each morning an unhappy affair. (I'm assuming you're happy with your job)

And as the other poster already said -- when the repugs say that bush* won by the largest number of votes ever, ask them if they know who got the SECOND largest number of votes in a presidential election ever. (They'll probably guess Reagan) Then you can just smile and say the answer is KERRY.

Repeat, there were more votes AGAINST bush* than were FOR any other winning presidential candidate in ANY other election. And remember that he got the SMALLEST MARGIN win of any incumbent president.

As for the congressional and senate races, just smile and say; "Well, we'll see how popular one party rule remains after the next two years. They won't have anyone to blame but themselves if things go wrong."

His margin of victory over Kerry was 3 million votes, the smallest margin of victory for an incumbent since 1916 and the smallest margin of victory for a President in a time of war in almost the same number of years. Further, he took the 11 Southern States by 5 million and lost the other 39 states by 2 million. Finally, without Ohio, Bush would have lost the election, and his margin of victory in Ohio was based on the gay-hate vote, the fear vote, and vote fraud by the machines in use. Even using the Liarfuhrer's definition of "mandate," any election in which you win by one or more votes, it's clear that he does not have a mandate to institute flat taxes, to destroy social security, to drive up the massive deficit, and to turn our republic into a theocracy, some of the ideas being pushed by the Bush conservatives in the aftermath.

If these people are the Christian right voters I would for get it but if they are just people who voted for Bush because of the war you could talk back. The Christian Right are a different breed, I think, as I had a family member that went over to them. I spent some time with them and they , or this group, tended to be right on every thing. They spend a good deal of time looking down on you and they do not like it if you talk back or question them. Every one of this type person I have run into in my life have had this type of thinking. Try reasoning with your 2 year old to get up to speed on talking to them.

12. I'm in the same predicament

The law office I work at is all repukes. If theres another progressive there they haven't said it out loud. But then its not something I go making public either as I have to keep this job. And being lawyers I'm sure they would find some way to can me that covers their asses if they really wanted to. So I listen to their gloating, keep a smile on my face and be the always cheerful receptionist.
