Potential 2006 candidates for (Florida) governor at a glance
he following is a look at potential candidates to replace Gov. Jeb Bush, who cannot seek re-election because of term limits:

Democrats:

U.S. Rep. Jim Davis — A 42-year-old lawyer from Tampa, Davis has served eight years in Congress. He previously served eight years in the Florida House.

Scott Maddox — A 36-year-old lawyer from Tallahassee, Maddox has been the Florida Democratic Party chairman for two years. He previously served nearly 10 years as Tallahassee mayor and is the former Florida League of Cities president.

State Sen. Rod Smith — A 55-year-old lawyer from Alachua, Smith has served four years in the Senate. He previously served eight years as a state attorney for the Gainesville area.

Republicans:

Attorney General Charlie Crist — A 48-year-old lawyer from Tampa, Crist has served as attorney general for two years. He previously served two years as education commissioner and six years in the state Senate.

Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher — A 60-year-old businessman from Miami, Gallagher has served two years as chief financial officer. He was elected as insurance commissioner three times and served two years as education commissioner. He served in the state House from 1974 to 1986 and was the appointed Secretary for the Department of Professional Regulation in 1987.

Lt. Gov. Toni Jennings — A 55-year-old businesswoman from Orlando, she was appointed lieutenant governor in 2003 to replace Frank Brogan. She was elected to the Florida House in 1976 and then to the state Senate in 1980. She served two terms as Senate president from 1996 to 2000, when she left the Legislature and returned home to run her family's construction business.

1. I would lean toward Davis right now,

but we should have some more choices. I heard Davis speak in a press conference with Wes Clark about a month ago. He comes off well and seems pretty sharp. I like Scott Maddox, but with our older population, I think he'd have a huge disadvantage. I didn't realize he had been mayor of Tallahassee. I know nothing of Toni Jennings, so maybe that means something. Not sure.

All I know is, we have to take the seat from the Repugnants.

Castor only lost by a small amount in the Senate race.

3. These are the six talked about names
Personally, I wish Maddox would go again for state-wide elected office. I don't think he's ready to run for Governor. Frankly, I'm not sure how we win this race in '06. Maybe Davis is a good choice because of his location along the I-4 corridor. I don't know. :shrug:

6. Daryl Jones.
He ran in the 2002 primaries against Reno and McBride....he ruled in the debates. He is a little on the conservative side, but intelligent and practical. Nice man, nice wife.
