I'm betting it's Danforth
to replace Powell. Former Senator from Missouri, Ambassador to the U.N., Minister. Easy confirmation. Who knows anything about how far right he is?

1. Yes, Danforth has liabilities...
But he has not, in the past, revealed himself as an idealogue. Perhaps a good thing, perhaps not.

2. Too old?
They like younger justices, like Thomas, that can be there for decades...

4. Not as Justice
for Sec of State. You're right, they probably wouldn't consider him as a SCOTUS appointment, but I think he's perfectly situated to jump in as Sec of State.

3. He lacks the manaical blood lust that charaterizes the current GOP.
He also appears to be more of a true Christian as opposed to a republican christian.

I think someone like Wolfowitz is more likely.

6. Don't scare me like that.
Actually, I don't believe wolfboy would ever get the votes for confirmation. Even a lot of rethugs detest him.

8. Bush will want someone who advocates violence over diplomacy.
Bush will see this as an excellent opportunity to impose his world vision on other countries and to denigrate and threaten any country which dares criticze him. Someone who believes in diplomacy and international law will be unacceptable to him. Because of that delusion of mandate thing I think the Senate will go along with whoever Bush nominates, unless there is a filibuster.

5. No, He's Too Moderate...He Has A Brain....Couldn't Be Trusted...
The Bush administration has nothing but disdain for UN so anyone they appoint to be ambassador to it is not held in high regard...I see Paul Wolfowitz moving up...Bremer has crapped his chances by letting it slip he asked for more troops...

7. THE MADNESS OF KING GEORGE
I always thought Danforth was, actually, a sane conservative... BUT, I thought that about Powell, too...

Powell's "good soldier" routine was a failure. He accomplished NOTHING in Bush-Co. Anyone Bush picks is bad, no matter what their reputation for sanity.

9. Very, very right wing. Here's some info:
...
"Some of John Danforth's controversial stances in the Senate included voting against sanctions on the apartheid government of South Africa in the mid-1980s, voting to cut funds for United Nations peacekeeping in the 1990s, and voting to limit U.S. support for international family planning programs.<4> Based on these stances and Danforth's current close association with several large corporations (see below), law professor Marjorie Cohn warned that Danforth is "right-wing zealot in moderate's clothing."<5> A Mother Jones investigation into stock trading by members of Congress turned up several large deals Danforth made while discussions or votes on related industries were pending in the Senate. These deals include purchasing between $100,000 and $200,000 in Bell Atlantic stock during discussions of the Bell Atlantic/ TCI merger, and selling between $30,000 and $100,000 in Philip Morris stock as support rose in the Senate for the Tobacco Consumption Reduction and Health Improvement Act."
