Falwell responds to Dean..."Dean would have had us speaking German."
No, Jerry Falwell, I don't think Howard Dean has ever referred to the South as "Jesus Land." I don't think so...

http://www.newsadvance.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=LNA/MGArticle/LNA_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1031779167948&path=

SNIP..."Dean also criticized the Bush campaign’s support in ballot initiatives in 11 states that essential banned same-sex marriages.
Dean said that support “had only one effect, which is to appeal to homophobia and fear and gay-bashing in order to win a presidential election.”

Dean singled out Falwell as an example of a “hate monger” prone to support the Bush campaign tactics.
“Most Americans are decent people - not all,” Dean said. “I mean, there are those hate mongers. I wouldn’t call Jerry Falwell a decent person.”

On Monday, Falwell questioned whether Dean has a “hate-filled” agenda of his own.

“Certain liberal Democrats - Howard Dean is just one of many - call the red states - states that voted for President Bush - Jesus land,” Falwell said. “It bugs them that the followers of Jesus Christ voted their convictions.”

Falwell said those same liberals attempt to skew political debate by attributing extreme positions to evangelical Christians.

“They believe that the views of Christians are akin to those of Islamic terrorists and Nazis,” Falwell said. “The purpose of government is to protect the rights of individuals. If Howard Dean had been president in the 1940s, he would have been responsible for the American people speaking German.”

Falwell said Dean’s comparing Bush to Milosevic is ludicrous.
“Only a blind, hateful liberal would believe that,” Falwell said...."

And a final statement from that nice Christian Falwell:
SNIP.."“He is mad at me because I represent 30 million evangelicals who helped re-elect George Bush, push (Senate Minority Leader) Tom Daschle from office and gave Republicans tighter control of the Senate and House,” Falwell said. “The truth is they’re crybabies on the left. They’re just sore losers.”

What a nice guy you are, Jerry. Such a kind loving Christian.

5. No, I never heard Dean use the term 'Jesusland.'
Now, I, on the other hand, may have done so when I was pretty angry (apology to any red-staters - I know that I can't paint an entire state with a broad brush, and I abhor bigotry). I know that there are plenty of DUers that are progressive that live in red states. But I have to agree with Dean's genuine statements.

Falwell is such a dangerous guy. He's just after the big $ that keep flowing in as he revs up the Base. He's after the power to. It bugs me that Dobson, Falwell, et al get more time with the pResident than members of the Senate. That's for sure.

27. Unfortunately, Jerry boy wasn't able to overcome
the same mental/spiritual gotcha that stands in the path of every person who aspires, in their young career (if they ever did) to do great good. At some point, as power, money, and influence begin to accumulate, the user of these resources comes to think of himself as the source of the wisdom and creativity that is being channeled, rather than the conduit. Christ, himself, explicitly warned against these obstacles and required his followers to behave in a way that minimized their hold on them. Even in the group that followed Jesus very closely, the same snags served to so uproot them that they became apologists, rather than actually powerful. At that point it became all about the magic show and has stayed that way ever since.

In his desperate search to become the thing he says he is, the clear thinking, beautiful minded person with such wonderful ideas for the benefit of humanity becomes the very evil against which he originally was pleged to fight. At that point, humanly enough, he is now totally blind to what has occured. So sad.

I'm a Christian and I hate him. In good conscience, no less.

This is the asshole who suggested we blow Iraqis away in the name of the Lord.

I thought he was enough of a bastard when he demanded his parishoners on the Old Time Gospel Hour each "write out a cheque for a hundred dollars" every damn week--back in the 70s!

Oooooooooh, he's in for a surprise when he goes to his eternal reward!

10. Let me ask Jerry Falwell something...
Edited on Tue Nov-16-04 02:28 AM by Forever Free
Is it "moral" to send our young men and women to die and be maimed for an unjust war fought under false pretenses?

Is it "moral" to send our troops onto the battlefield without the necessary equipment and without adequate manpower to win the peace?

Is it "moral" to leave over 20 million people without adequate health-care?

Is it "moral" that more people now live under the poverty line than in previous decades?

Is it "moral" that the wealtiest 2% benefit the most out of the tax cuts, while the remaning 98% have to pay the burden of a trillion dollar deficit created by your president?

Is it "moral" that environmental protections that have safeguarded us for decades have been gutted by this administration?

Is it "moral" to say "No Child Left Behind" and then don't provide the necessary funding to make that actually happen?

Is it "moral" to wrap yourselves in OUR flag and then criticize those who dissent as helping the terrorists while this president cuts veterans' benefits?

Is it "moral" to attack the character, dignity, and patriotism of a distinguished senator and war hero, while at the same time preaching to the Democrats that they shouldn't wage a "negative campaign"?

Is it "moral" to parade the corpses of 9/11 at your convention and politicize the greatest tragedy that has hit this nation in history?

NO, Mr. Falwell. The American people DO HAVE moral values. But the red states and Republicans DO NOT have a monopoly on it. You certainly don't. Conservatives have hijacked OUR flag, OUR patriotism, OUR country. I'll be damned if you steal OUR values as well.

12. Ya know, I'm really tired of all the "politically correct" language!
Howard Dean couched his words in the "I don't consider Jerry Fallwell a decent person". He sould have just said, Fallwell is a religious bigot!

There's a lot of different groups and leaders I disagree with, and I've done the damn "correct" speech way too many times! I'm tired of it! Lets get back to calling a spade a spade.

The media kept talking, in this last election, about Kerry (or shrub) stopping just short of calling their opponent a liar. So why did they stop?

We all think in real words! So do they!

17. hey Jerry, go to hell
Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples,
saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people's shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them.

All their works are performed to be seen. They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor...greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation 'Reverend.'

..."Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You lock the kingdom of heaven before human beings. You do not enter yourselves, nor do you allow entrance to those trying to enter.
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You travel sea and land to make one convert, and when that happens you make him a child of hell twice as much as yourselve.
"Woe to you, blind guide, who say, 'If one swears by the temple, it means nothing, but if one swears by the gold of the temple, one is obligated...
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You pay tithes and have neglected the weightier things of the law: judgment and mercy and fidelity.these you should have done, without neglecting the others.
Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.

You serpents, you brood of vipers, how can you flee from the judgment of hell?

Make a statement

“The purpose of government is to protect the rights of individuals.

And follow it with an entirely unrelated conclusion

If Howard Dean had been president in the 1940s, he would have been responsible for the American people speaking German.”

Not surprising though.

Every argument the right makes is based on illogic.

48. A reminder of what Jerry Falwell really believes
Partial transcript of comments from the Thursday, September 13, 2001 edition of the "700 Club"

JERRY FALWELL: And I agree totally with you that the Lord has protected us so wonderfully these 225 years. And since 1812, this is the first time that we've been attacked on our soil and by far the worst results. And I fear, as Donald Rumsfeld, the Secretary of Defense, said yesterday, that this is only the beginning. And with biological warfare available to these monsters - the Husseins, the Bin Ladens, the Arafats - what we saw on Tuesday, as terrible as it is, could be miniscule if, in fact - if, in fact - God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.

PAT ROBERTSON: Jerry, that's my feeling. I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven't even begun to see what they can do to the major population.

JERRY FALWELL: The ACLU's got to take a lot of blame for this.

PAT ROBERTSON: Well, yes.

JERRY FALWELL: And, I know that I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way - all of them who have tried to secularize America - I point the finger in their face and say "you helped this happen."

PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I totally concur, and the problem is we have adopted that agenda at the highest levels of our government. And so we're responsible as a free society for what the top people do. And, the top people, of course, is the court system.

JERRY FALWELL: Pat, did you notice yesterday the ACLU, and all the Christ-haters, People For the American Way, NOW, etc. were totally disregarded by the Democrats and the Republicans in both houses of Congress as they went out on the steps and called out on to God in prayer and sang "God Bless America" and said "let the ACLU be hanged"? In other words, when the nation is on its knees, the only normal and natural and spiritual thing to do is what we ought to be doing all the time - calling upon God.

PAT ROBERTSON: Amen

Neither one of these asshole false prophet imposters deserves an ounce of credibility from even the religious right after these comments.

49. Thanks, AntiCoup2k
Unfortunately, I was one of the people who forgot; I bumbled across that speech shortly before Black Wednesday and suddenly it all made sense: why the church I was active in for two years suddenly seemed to go completely insane and why the internet I retreated to seemed to be filled with intelligent young kids who wanted to kill themselves.

Sadly, there are people who pay attention to what the teletubbie-phobic idiot has to say and don't consider it to be comic relief.

56. The prophets of hate are all around us, pointing fingers and calling
everyone around them haters while there are 3 fingers pointing back at themselves. This folks turn more people OFF from God than on!They won't have any promises of heaven if there is such a thing, this sort of bowels of earth are the worst sort of human, sub-human should I say, for they say they are godly while spewing anything about god, spreading the Word as hate and masquerading as saints. I can see right through their charade, little men behind the curtain of Oz, power hungry and greedy. Take away their profits and they'd stop preaching about anything. It's money they worship, other people's money, simple as that.

51. Don't Understand
The one thing I can't comprehend about all this is how Christians can accept this immoral, unnecessary war...how does that jive with their alleged moral values? Remember when priests used to protest the Viet Nam war? What happened?

55. The followers of Jesus Christ voted their convictions?
Only if they voted for Kerry, buddy.

If they voted for *, I missed the memo where Jesus advocated bombing and killing thousands of people who did nothing to us.

Hmm.

Hey Falwell: KISS MY ASS.

57. You Pluck the Sliver From Their Eye, but
ignore the log in your own.

This is who we need to make the face of the Repuke Party. They've demonized liberals and public education, it's time to take the effing gloves off and demonize them. He is pure and total evil!

59. Jerry, ask Robertson about the "No casualty" War going on
Actually, I was hoping Falwell would be taking a dirt nap soon. We should petition a holiday when the asswipe croaks.

60. Marc 12:38
And Jesus said unto them in his doctrine, "Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long robes, and love salutations in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best place at feasts; Who devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers. These will receive the greater condemnation."
Judgement Day will not be your best day Jerry, trust me.

61. Isn't there a description
that goes, "He has Jesus always in his mouth but never in his heart."?

Heinlein wrote a future history in which he portrayed a decade as the "Crazy Years" - a time when logic and reason were abandoned for religious inanities spouted by power-hungry, impious schemers. I don't think even he thought it would come to pass.

Falwell and his ilk are enough to make me wish there were a God with heaven and hell as just rewards.

If you get a chance, read Carl Sandburg's poem "To a Bunkshooter". You'll find great ammo for verbal battle with these hair oil salesmen.

He's so irrelevant especially since 9/11.
