16. I Never Understood What Bush Saw in Her

(politically, that is). Now I realize that as an academic, her strength is probably verbal. She presents her positions and accomplishments well regardless of merit. I've never seen any evidence that she is a good manager, diplomat, or has the kind of personal strengths which usually allow someone to do well in a cabinet-level job.

But Bush is a front-office guy -- he has no idea what's going on the trenches, and believes anyone who tells a good story. That's why he thinks Condi is OK.

...Oregon Senator Ron Wyden and Republican Senator XX (I'm blanking on his name) were asked for their reaction to Bush/Rice remarks.

Wyden said that on a 1-10 scale of "affectionate relationship", Bush was about a 13 for Condi.

Senator XX said that there's only an inch between Bush and Rice and that makes her very powerful.

Those comments were astounding! How long before there's open talk of a sexual relationship? The look on his face as he watched her speak was very telling.
