Former Clark Spokesman: Liberals, lend an ear to Middle America
By JAMAL SIMMONS
Published on: 11/15/04

Since Election Day, I have been on the receiving end of e-mail tirades from friends threatening to leave America, jokes about seceding from "Jesus-land," and reveling in columns from European newspapers denigrating the 58 million Americans who voted for Republicans. The common cry is to blast those who voted Republican as Neanderthal "Jesus freaks" intent on extinguishing the glow of enlightenment shining from the urban centers on both coasts.

If only we could educate them, some bemoan . . .

Let's have teach-ins to school them, others suggest.

1. Not signing up to read this....I'm not liking the tone already....
Talk about OUR values, yes....but I hope the rest of this doesn't go on about "moving" toward somewhere.....

2. Pro-Bush fundamentalists don't need listening to ...
they need to go and get an social education ... and some analytical skills. I'm sorry.

If I was dealing with someone who had tried and worked to become informed, and who could make a viable argument, I would listen. But mindless parroting of distorted and false information is not something I am going to waste the precious time I have on this earth listening to ... not today, not later.

6. So you've decided to write off
all 58 million of them?

That sounds like a winner.

3. Is this that matt bennet jerk who insulted Clark the day after campaign
ended? Could your tiny excerpt at least give us the name - rather than using Clark's?

4. It says Jamal Simmons
I recall him as being pretty good, though I was never that up to speed on the insider stuff.

5. I still think they're just voting against the know it all
college boy/city slicker who gets hired into management and starts bossing them around without knowing his ass from his elbow about the everyday realities of the job.

They'll vote against anybody who is urbane and sophisticated. As much as I despise everything he's done, I do give Bush credit for speaking the language of the rural areas. Sure, we know it's fake, but even fake populism works a whole lot better than genuine intellectualism.

9. Most repukes are Neanderthal 'Jesus Freaks', who are trying
to extinguish the glow of enlightenment from the world, not just the blue states. If the repuke moderates and centrists want a party that reflects their values, let them form their own and not try to move democrats from their core beliefs and values, just to accomodate them in their angst at having their party highjacked. The DLC would be happy to have them, I'm sure.
