Wealth without work, politics without principle, commerce without morality
Edited on Thu Nov-18-04 07:18 PM by Q
First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. - Mahatma Ghandi, In Philosophy

Wealth without Work
Pleasure without Conscience
Science without Humanity
Knowledge without Character
Politics without Principle
Commerce without Morality
Worship without Sacrifice

Peace will not come out of a clash of arms but out of justice lived and
done by unarmed nations in the face of odds.

Democracy and violence can ill go together.
Evolution of democracy is not possible if we are not prepared to hear the other side.

A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave.

Hatred ever kills, love never dies; such is the vast difference between the
two. What is obtained by love is retained for all time. What is obtained by
hatred proves a burden in reality for it increases hatred.

Non-cooperation with evil is a sacred duty.

You assist an evil system most effectively by obeying its orders and decrees.
An evil system never deserves such allegiance. Allegiance to it means partaking of the evil.
A good person will resist an evil system with his or her whole soul.

Nonviolence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is
mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man

It may be long before the law of love will be recognized in international
affairs. The machinery's of government stand between and hide the hearts of
one people from those of another.

3. Don't forget this one:
When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they fall--think of it, ALWAYS.

6. What an amazing person! William Shirer quotes Alber Einstein
this way: When future generations look at Gandhi's life, they will wonder whether such a man as him actually walked this earth.

8. I got to thinking today...
Edited on Thu Nov-18-04 07:46 PM by Q
...that we're learning NOTHING from our enemies. We wage a war against terrorism without even trying to understand why terrorism exists.

- And I'm very disappointed that my party doesn't put up more resistance to the evil that is the Bush* administration.

13. I believe many on the left...
...are beginning to realize that those they chose to lead have no interest in seeking justice or peace. They don't want to sacrifice anything for the benefit of the people.

This is why the Bushies and many Democrats are becoming so 'friendly'. If everyone is evil then no one is evil.

15. This is what I see as a fundamental problem...
I'm one of those people who actually believes in the principles of truth, justice, peace, equality, inclusiveness of all people, civil rights, etc. I'm currently in the process of studying various source materials that have to do with the founding of this country and of the Democratic Party... things we should all be backing, but it's like our leaders have forgotten all this shit or compromised to the point of ridiculousness when they try to then stand on principle. Our "narrative" is lacking precisely because of this problem. One example : We all (including Kerry) should have been anti-war in Iraq and stood by that, especially when the reasons for going to war kept being manufactured by the Lie Factory.

10. Some more
The people came to realise that wealth is not the fruit of labor but the result of organised protected robbery. Franz Fanon

The most dangerous man to any govt is the man who is able to think things out for himself without regard to the prevailing superstition and taboos. Almost invariably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane and intolerable and so, if he is a romantic, he tries to change it. And if he is not a romantic personally he is apt to spread discontent among those who are. H.L. Mencken

14. You need to also add "Patriotism without service to country" or
like Worship, "Patriotism without sacrifice" equals jingoism or "sunshine" patriotism.

16. Context of the quote:
Edited on Thu Nov-18-04 09:41 PM by Q
The things that will destroy us are:
politics without principle;
pleasure without conscience;
wealth without work;
knowledge without character;
business without morality;
science without humanity,
and worship without sacrifice.
- Mahatma Ghandi

-----

- And you're right about 'patriotism without sacrifice'. It's a hollow gesture and nationalist in nature....as is war without sacrifice by those who wage it. Bush's* desire to wage a 'bloodless' war sends a signal that war is clean and neat and Americans can waste all they want without bothering their conscience.
