Thank you for contacting me regarding Depleted Uranium (DU).
I appreciate your thoughts and understand your concerns on this issue.
As you may know, Depleted Uranium is derived from natural
uranium mined from the earth's crust. Uranium is composed of three
radioactive isotopes that emit particles during decay, and possesses high
energy. Uranium poses a radiation hazard to tissue in close proximity.
DU possesses only 60% of the radioactivity of natural uranium.
US armed forces use DU in shells designed to pierce the armor
plating of tanks. DU was first used in the 1991 Gulf War. According to
the Presidential Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans' Illnesses in
1996, there is no evidence of a correlation between depleted uranium
and Gulf War illnesses. It is critical that we fully understand the impact
of DU shells on our servicemen and women, as the health and welfare of
those serving the nation is of the utmost importance to me. Rest assured,
I will keep your views in mind should legislation regarding depleted
uranium come before the Senate for consideration.
Again, thank you for contacting me. I hope that the information
I have provided is helpful. My website,
http://bayh.senate.gov, can
provide additional details about legislation and state projects, and you
can also sign up to receive my monthly e-newsletter, The Bayh Bulletin,

and hope you will continue to keep me informed of the issues important
to you.
Best wishes,
