The "New Reality" Shell Game
"We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality - judiciously, as you will - we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors... and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."
- A senior advisor to Bush, as quoted by Ron Suskind of the New York Times.

Without a Doubt: Faith, certainty, and the Presidency of George W. Bush

With a rapidly increasing number of "new realities" to deal with, the defenders of "old realities" are gradually overwhelmed and defeated. At some point, the "new realities" become de facto reality. Consider the following quote:

"When an opponent declares, 'I will not come over to your side,' I calmly say, 'Your child belongs to us already... What are you? You will pass on. Your descendants, however, now stand in the new camp. In a short time they will know nothing else but this new community.'"
- Adolf Hitler

The treacherous strategy to reengineer reality worked for Hitler, and it's working for the RRR (Radical Republican Right). It works because it's a confidence game - on a staggering scale, and played for the ultimate commodity: acquiescence; willing complicity; blind obedience; absolute power.

The Nazis conned their nation into surrendering its concept of reality in exchange for one without human qualities. When their mighty army of dehumanized marks was in place, the Nazis simply commanded it to expand their "new community" to include rest of the world, (the old-fashioned way). Most of us are aware of what it took to finally stop them.

A growing number of Americans are asking the following questions:

"Can it happen here?"

"Is it already happening?"

What does your intuition tell you? Does this feel right to you? Is it just a coincidence that the RRR's ideology, rhetoric, and actions bear a striking - although unquestionably "kinder and gentler" - resemblance to their Nazi equivalents?

"Nah, it can't happen here. We have too much respect for tradition. Americans are good people. We have a remarkable government that always repairs itself."

It's not your father's fascism, but it is happening here. Fascism 2.0 (the stealth edition) is considerably more sophisticated than its crude predecessor. The 21st century fascist is determined to avoid making the same mistakes as his 20th century counterpart. Once again, the only thing that stands in his way is the liberal.

Liberal resistance to fascism didn't last long in Germany. I'm afraid that American liberals are losing a similar battle in a similar manner. The RRR's success in portraying liberals as enemies has made it possible for them to strip liberals of political power and claim bogus "majorities" and "mandates." And to think that they're planning a "political capital" shopping spree...

How do we fight back?

To get a better understanding of how we should fight back, we need an honest assessment of what we're doing now. As predicted, we're so busy "judiciously studying" their "new realities" that we have little time for anything else. We're overwhelmed, confused, and disorganized. We're running to extinguish every little fire they set, and this will eventually exhaust us.

There's no point in blaming ourselves, because treachery and hatred aren't things that good people naturally prepare for.

What we need first is a detailed overview of the "battlefield," so we can assess, prioritize, organize, and mount a successful defense. Without a "big picture" strategy, we'll keep playing their shell game - until we lose. It goes without saying that we need leaders who are willing to fight to expose the fraud. Until we organize a coherent defense, we're at the mercy of criminals.

1. I was in Berlin last month
Really learned a lot about Germany's descent into fascism. One of the creepier parallels to our own descent is that the Nazis put out these messages that decadence was corrupting the true hard working germans. They played to the whole nobility of the downtrodden german worker/farmer thing. They were able to demonize intellectuals and social leaders as being corrupted. They romanticized suffering and sacrafice.

I saw Thomas Frank last night talking about his new book, "What's the Matter with Kansas?: How Conservatives Won the Heart of America" and he detailed how the GOP used the language of populism, the language which used to serve democrats, to court middle america. Ironically even thought the GOP IS the government, they are able to talk about how bad government is and portray themselves as the only cure.

2. My grandmother lived through it.
We talked about it a few times, but it was too painful for her. I stopped bringing it up because it mortified her.

I visited Berlin once when half of it was still communist. (It sucked.) I can't imagine what it's like now.

5. You can tell pretty easily whether you are in what
used to be the East or what used to be West. Nice vibrant city for the most part. I went for Einheit day (reunification) so people were in a great mood. Had to be terrible to live under double occupation. People were shot trying to get out of the East as late as 1987.

6. It's an impressive city.
I spent a few days sightseeing and walking around West Berlin. Also visited the communist sector on a day pass. It was like a trip into the Twilight Zone.

The clothes, cars, electronic gadgets - straight from the 1950's. Almost every car was a Trabant - each one a dull shade of a primary color. There were a few buildings of modern, authoritarian design. I went to the top of the tower (forget what it's called), and when I came back down, I had the most delicious ice cream cone that I've ever had in my life. They only sold one flavor, but boy was it good. And I took a lot of pictures. When the day was over, I had a pile of worthless currency left over. I offered it to a group of kids. I could tell they wanted it, but they didn't respond. I put it on the ground and walked away. The last thing I saw was an East German soldier distributing the money among the kids. Pretty sad...

They have a lot to celebrate now. Would love to visit again...

11. the city has changed a lot
Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 09:14 PM by Kellanved
The Trabants are almost gone, actually they are treated as oldtimers now. As is most of the wall, few remainders of the Iron Curtain are still visible. New construction and many Billions have given the city an almost normal western-European face; London can look a lot more like east-Berlin nowadays than east-Berlin (and vice-versa, Berlin is actually used as stage for London-themed movies) .

Considering it's size, the city is still underpopulated and will continue to be that way, as it is only growing at a relaxed pace.
Also it is a very poor city, with a high unemployment rate and a huge debt - the subsidy based west Berlin economy collapsed after the reunification; the capital status has brought jobs, but not for native Berliners. The Eastern Part is actually better off, than the western now.

It is by far the most interesting German city and the most livable (although some people prefer cities with a more agreeable climate); providing world-class culture at a relaxed pace with a very moderate price-tag (well, the Euro/Dollar rate is going to be a huge problem).

12. I see you actually live there.
Neato :)

It did remind me of London. It was overcast and rainy the whole time I was there. Most of my photos came out gray.

As for the Trabants - I would love to own one. It would really stand out around here in SUV country.

My mother was born in Berlin, but her family moved from there when she was still a toddler. I visited out of curiosity. I'm glad I did.

Like I said, I would love to visit again someday. Thanks for the informative post.

3. The suckers don't realize
that they're purging their lives of the only things that have real, lasting value.

What does that say about them?

At the very least, one can conclude that some people are willing to trade anything for nothing.

The problem with fascism is that it grows through corruption. What it can't corrupt, it attacks. I'm afraid that the corruption already reaches deep into the Democratic Party. Some of these people still have the opportunity to redeem themselves, but it will be costly. In order to expose the fraud, they will have to reveal their complicity.

8. Made the "empire" quote my sig line. After the theft, they made a new
reality: the Moral Value BS (from exit polls showing W losing). Many (from our side too) rushed to study this new reality - and find ways to adapt to it....
As for the following steps to dictatorship, they are already in place:

9. I'd like to see a photo of the billboard mentioned in your link.
The billboard seems a little obvious. Of course, it may not be ovious enough.

10. "Talkin' About the "F" Word"
Just read a great article on CounterPunch that sheds a little more light on the subject. Here's an excerpt:

I would like to sketch out why I believe it is appropriate to start using the "F" word to describe what is happening in US politics. I don't mean the "F" word that consists in four letters and, so I've been given to know, is not fit to appear even in the pages of this far-from-prudish newsletter. I mean the one that captures the important respects in which George W. Bush and his handlers differ from business-as-usual, establishment conservatives, from the Nixons and Reagans and Thatchers of history. To wit, "Fascism".
